putting2 6x9 speakers in a 71-74 b-body.

Post by 72 blue 400 » Sun Mar 17, 2013 11:41 am

is there a special bracket for putting 2 6x9 speakers in a 71-74 b-body.on my 72 roadrunner the passenger side fits fine ,but the hole for the drivers side is too small and i dont want to cut the speaker tray to put it in,is there a special adapter bracket that needs to be used?i have seen the rear defroster/speaker brackets for e-bodys,is this what needs to be used.or is there a completly different bracket for b-bodys,i have bought the rear speaker switch and all the harness for hooking them up,but cant mount the drivers side.anyone else run into this problem??

The factory to the best of my knowledge never offered two speakers in the back. They used to sell two different size speakers, 5x7, and 6x9, hence, why the two sizes of holes. So you could install either size, aftermarket. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it is, what it is. :(

yeah,i was hoping someone made an adapter for the other 6x9 without have to drill holes in the speaker tray.

Mount them from the bottom, and you wont have to cut the sheet metal. Might have drill different holes though.

If you mount them from the bottom, you could make your own adaptor. You could use a thin sheet of plywood and paint it to the body color so that it doesn't show too much.

These might work. The description is thin, but the pic looks about right.

With a jigsaw and a piece of stiff plastic or wood, or even sheet metal about 1/8" thick, you could make one fairly easily.

 LOL, take it easy, pictures help humans communicate more efficiently. I was just wanting to see your car and see if the rear speaker hole is the same as on my 72 and what kind of speakers you were installing, if you were going to install from the top or the bottom and how clean or dirty is your trunk, ect...ect. Anyway if it is the same then I could let you know that they do have adapters for bigger/smaller speakers/holes. Although, JimT1971RR is correct you can fabricate your own adapter.
OH, and of my 58 posts I have only asked for pics/pictures/images FIVE times, and said "cant wait to see more pictures" one time, so it couldn't be every time. :haha:

I just installed a set of these last week, 6X9, mounts from the bottom, comes with their own adapter plate, no drilling holes, just install, works great:
