Roadrunner with Thermoquad
From what I have been able to find out, the Carter Thermoquad was stock on the 1972 383. Is that correct? If so, I'm looking for a CHOKE THERMOSTAT, sometimes called a heat stove, etc. Anyone know where I can locate one? A reproduction is fine, but so far I've only found them for Holley carbs and small blocks. Unfortunately, I don't have a manual that covers 71-72, so I'm at a loss to find a part number. If someone has a picture, or ID on the unit itself, that would be a great help!
On further review, it looks like the 383 may have become a 400 for 1972. In a nutshell, I have a Carter Thermoquad, an Edelbrock Performer manifold and a '71 383 engine that I am trying to put a choke thermostat on. The manifold is made for a right angle mounting plate, with the screw holes on top. Any help would be appreciated. I have a similar design on my '74 318 engine with Holley 4165 spreadbore carb and Edelbrock manifold.

Re: Roadrunner with Thermoquad
Well you're mostly right. Thermoquads became standard in 1972 on the 400 4v engine. The 383 in '71 used a square pattern intake, with either a small Holley or Carter AVS carb.
I'm not sure which o.e.m. style choke thermostat will fit that intake. I'll do a little digging.

Okay, I looked at my 1985 D350 with a 360. I think its got the style you're talking about. Now this truck came with a Rochester carb. So order one, or ask the parts person to show you a picture of one for a 1984 model, with 360 4v.
That truck came with a Thermoquad.
Let us know if it works!

Just to put a plug in here since you mentioned Thermoquad - i had a factory thermoquad rebuilt + slightly upgraded by a guy in Georgia whose business goes by the name of "Demon Sizzler". This was on a 74 Cuda 360 4 speed. Was very happy with that thermoquad !!
