3 speed transmission question

Post by SparXalt » Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:53 pm

Hi guys,

I figured I'd pick your brains a little. I just bought a 72 RR the guy told me it was a 400 4spd. Original drive train is long gone - traded away. But then I got a picture of the fender tag and it's a (E68) 400 High-pref with a (D13) 3 spd manual on the floor. I have a 4 spd in my other 71 satellite, so I know a good bit about the A-833 and the differences between years, tailshafts, and bodies. But I have never seen a 3 spd. A little bit of research shows these were the base transmission in a 72 RR.

So my question is what am I looking for? Is it an A-230? I know there are two different gearsets in those (BB and /6) but are there differing tailshafts and shifter mounts like the A-833 has? any info would be great. Thanks guys.

I like three speed cars. 3 speeds were standard, everything else was optional. Seems like it is a car with few options. Fender tag Info? Have you Got any pictures?

Just unloaded it today and pushed it in the garage. But I forgot to take a picture.

Tag info: TX9 Black, Black Vinyl Bench, Delete Standard Outside Mirror, Roof Drip Rail Moldings, Electronic Ignition 72 only, Duel Exhaust w/o Tips, Chrome Duel Exhaust Tips, Music Master Radio AM. It's a short tag, but i like it.

Well, even though the 3-speed manual transmission was the standard equipment. With the automatic and 4-speed as options. It was rare to see a 3-speed manual equipped Road Runner. Especially with a console! If you're concerned about hurting the value of the car. Keep the 3-speed. So when you sell it, and someone gripes. You can show him that you have the transmission and parts sitting in the corner of the garage, and it'll go with the car. They can put it back in if they want.
