My car wont start by the igntion?

Post by Mo Power » Mon Aug 04, 2008 5:27 pm

This is just bugging me the only way the Runner will start if I jump the starter solenoid and it won't do anything when I turn over the igntion. So I thought it was the solenoid and replaced and doesn't matter and I don't know what would be causing it other then something in the column. Also what would be causing my brake lights to not work all the wires I've checked and everything works except them. Please help need assistance

Check the brake switch for your brake lights.

Your brake switch is located under the dash around where your brake pedal bolts to your brake booster or if you have manuall brakes your master cylinder rod. Has some wires plugged to it.

Your brake lights run through your turn signal switch, I have had that probelm a couple of times. If your not concerned about originality and if that is your brake light problem go to the parts house and ask for a turn signal switch for a 79 Dodge truck as most show 70 - 74 Road Runner/Charger unavailable. Same switch, but some of the wires are a diffrent color, but works fine. Last one I bought was $29 from auto zone. Beats the high prices from paddock and year one. That is for 70 and up, not sure what year of road runner you have.

So are you saying that it runs through the turn signal relay thats also under the dash because I know where the flasher is and theres one that is hanging rite under my column and I'm not exactly sure what it is. Mines a 72 so the 79 switch would work. I'll get a picture cause I know theres a hazard relay and turn signal relay never knew there was one for the brakes.

look for a button type switch that the break pedal are touches when the pedal is pushed down.

you might have a bad ignition switch. Or you might have a bad connection at the firerwall.

Well it was the neutral safety switch and it had one wire undone could barely see it. But about the brake lights I think a picture would help me out cause I've tryed looking for some type of eletrical thing where the pedal goes down and I haven't seen what exactly I'm looking for.

This is the general area to look under your dash, these are 70 4 speed pedals. Your switch may be white plastic, not sure. Will have some wires plugged into it. There will be a bolt to adjust it. You want the switch to be out for the brake lights to work. When you let up off your brake pedal, the switch should be in.

I still say it's your turn signal switch the reason your brake lights don't work.

Go to the parts house, get a turn signal switch, unhook yours, plug the new one in and hit the brakes and see if they work, if they still don't bring the switch back. It does not have to installed in the column to work.

Did you check to see if you had a blown fuse?

when my brake lights weren't working, all i did was spray the switch with Wd40...pry not safe, but it worked....for the starting of the car, i put in a pushbutton starter (it's cool) plus my car wouldn't always start with the key...i have no idea why...sometimes the harness to the trans would come unplugged, but after being plugged in it wouldn't start sometimes...once in a while it surprises me, but the button is my fav - mounted in the console

Well Ive checked the fuses and they all seem good so it's one of the two problems you guys have been talking about.

Could just be a broken wire somewhere also. I believe your brake light wire is dark green coming out of your column switch. You could get a tester and if you have power out of the column switch, then go to under your kick panel and check for power and just go down a little each time until you find the break. I think we have all been there at one time or another. Don't give up, you will find the problem. Go to theese links and print the schematic off and piece the 2 together to help you. I think these are for non rallye dash, but the brake wiring will be the same.
