Alternator brackets
I'm in the process of putting a '72 440 HP in my '74. Does anynoe have a tech print or drawing of how the alternator brackets are setup? All my stuff was in boxes. A second question: how/where does the vapor separator mount near the fuel pump?

maybe you can get something out of this - if nobody else posts, i can get some better pics tomorrow - basically, though, the curved piece goes on the bottom, the i guess "T"shaped piece is on top, then there is an approx 2.5" spacer taht goes between it and the bolt hole in the head...pretty simple - the power steering brackets had me and my pops stumped for about a half hour, though

Here's a couple of pictures of the brackets on a '72 440 with a/c and power steering. If memory serves me right the idler pulley is only used on engines with a/c as without it the waterpump is driven by the same belt the alternator uses and it's a single belt. I replaced the stock "V Twin" compressor with a Sanden rotary unit but the belts/brackets are the same.BillS wrote:I'm in the process of putting a '72 440 HP in my '74. The vapor separator mounts on the front bolt of the fuel pump. I don't have a pix of that handy, but will try and remember to get one tomorrow and post it here.

Sorry this is such a late bump, but it's odd to see that layout.
I have a '71 with 440 (it's a '75 block and a mix of parts) but it has A/C and PS on it and there is one belt that goes around the crank, A/C pulley, and alternator, there is another belt that runs around the waterpump, crank and PS pulley.
I was told that if you don't have A/C, you need to mount the PS pump up higher on the block to take the place of the A/C compressor.

I have a '71 with 440 (it's a '75 block and a mix of parts) but it has A/C and PS on it and there is one belt that goes around the crank, A/C pulley, and alternator, there is another belt that runs around the waterpump, crank and PS pulley.

Hmmm....that is an odd one. How many pulleys do you have on your crankshaft? My engine has 4, which is the way it came. (I know, I bought the car new). The outermost (to the front) pulley almost looks like it has been added as the other three pulley groves are in a single large pulley. It might be that your engine (or crank, or crank pulley) may not have been on an original 440 with a/c and p/s. Another thought, there is a 440 and a high performance 400. There is a pad on the front left top of the block that will have "HP" on it for the high performance engines. Yeah, this motor is a mutt of all sorts of parts from all different years, but they routed the belts as I mentioned. it's a 1975 440 block, standard, non-HP.
I do have the 4-groove crank pulley, the forward-most 2 of them have no belts, the AC/alternator is running off groove 3, PS belt is running off groove 4 (rear-most groove).
I have a monstorous 100amp alternator mounted at the same height as the AC pulley.
I have the feeling that, after counting all the different alternator/PS pump/AC compressor/Water pump combos out over the years, there are as many different combos as there are stars in the sky.

I think being a '75 might make a difference too. There might have been a air pump on it. I don't remember when that came to being as mine had minimal "emissions" stuff. As you can see on mine the rear two belts drive the a/c and alternator. With the p/s next forward and the water pump (with idler pulley) on the front one.
