I went to the paint store (auto) and they're not sure anyone makes it - their supplier was Sherwin Williams, I believe.
Speaking of which, what do folks pay for a decent 2-stage metallic paint job with the usual minor body work and so forth? Including jambs but not doing interior of engine compartment.
I was quoted SIX GRAND by two places in CA - one out by Sacramento and the other in Marin County.
Who makes GY8 - and how much do people pay for painting?

Bodywork and paint is always pricey... LOTS of tedious labor involved to do it RIGHT. I've heard of cars with $10,000 (or more) paint jobs. And then there's always MAACO and Earl Scheib for the other end of the spectrum.
$6k for paint without doing the engine compartment? I'd guess they're wanting to make sure you'd be making it worth their while to take on a project they really don't WANT.
Were these your typical everyday collision/insurance type body shops, or places that do old car paint jobs as part of their usual routine?

There are quite a few hours involved in a paint job. Dont forget the car is over thirty years old. Your always bound to come across some unexpected issues. Whats his hourly rate? You could easily put 100 hours of work on a quality paint job. Six grand isnt too bad considering the prices are a little higher on the west coast.

I would say $6000 is totally reasonable nowadays...he will have $2000 just in paint and supplies. This is not 1980 anymore. A "friend" that's a painter or bodyman isn't gonna do it for less than about $4000-5000. We are talking about quality, not Maaco of course.
