72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
72 RR original air grabber car, wondering IF the black on the Air grabber bubble continues onto the hood behind the actual bubble OR does that area stay body color?
Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
On 72, body color.
71's w/ V21 got paint behind the bubble.
71's w/ V21 got paint behind the bubble.

Cool, Thanks
Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
N96 cars
On 71's no black paint behind except for V21 optioned cars
For 72's black paint behind except for cars ordered with v21 v25 stripes then just body color.

Paint on non-V21/V25 cars? Don't have a original paint car to reference, but I'd swear I'd seen the factory documentation that does not indicate paint in that area on any 72.

I’d be curious to see what back-up you may have for that as well. I’ve never seen an original paint ‘72 A/G car with organosol on the hood behind the bubble. What option code would that be then if the V21 code shifted over to the twin stripe V21/V25 for ‘72? If additional paint needed to be applied on the line it would have a code.1972RM23 wrote:N96 cars

This is an original paint 1972 with N96 used in a magazine performance build circa 1972-73.
Black paint behind the dome on N96 car w/o V21 stripe.
Paint behind the dome is left off when you ordered V21 hood/deck stripe.
The paint and stripes conflict since they do not run parallel.
Original paint photo above.
I'll find more original paint photos.

Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
Interesting discussion. I too was under the impression that no 72 cars had the blackout behind the bubble, but I'm the first to admit I know 71s a lot better than 72s. I'd be interested to hear from Larry about the paint on his car.

Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
Hmmm, this is interesting. I have been told by a few people that the 71's had the V21 option and they got the organsol paint behind the bubble, and 72's did not as the V21 option was not available in 72 as a stand alone option,
However, here are some pictures of 72's with them.
I will try and post a pic of a car that is original paint, original air grabber car and no organsol paint behind the bubble, So I'm curious now and I wonder if there were a few early production cars that were still able to get the 71 Hood treatment on them???

Ok, I know this is not relevant but does this also apply to GTX hoods?
Since some of our parts have unknown origins

Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
My 72 appears to have been painted behind the bubble and it is also blacked out on the cowl panel underneath.

Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
I don’t doubt there were N96 cars produced with the black out, particularly early SPD cars (such as Larry’s). The question is really whether they represent the rule or the exception.
I suspect the elimination of the paint was a running change. Since the painted hoods aren’t an inventoried part, there should be a clean cut-off date that may vary by assembly plant.
I doubt anyone can document enough original paint N96 cars to determine a date. There just weren't enough produced to begin with. The engineering drawing (like the one I have for 71s) would be the only way to know the “rule”

Re: 72 RR Air Grabber, paint question
From an original printing, dated 8-1-71, of the official ’72 Satellite sales brochure.
Sure sounds like some early production ‘72 A/G cars made it out with some paint on them, I have some distinct memories from the time of that hood treatment ending with ’71 and never saw a ’72 with the treatment around the dealers back then.
