73 roadrunner transmission question

Post by jimistone » Thu May 13, 2021 7:56 am

Hi guys, I am brand new to this forum. I bought a '73 roadrunner last week. It is an H code 340 car. It has a manual tranny. It seems to be the 3 speed with the knob on the stick and not the 4 speed with the pistol grip. My question is this: were 3 speed 340 H code cars produced in 1973?
I have searched and searched the net and can only find mention of 340 4 speeds or automatics.

Never mind. I didn't look closely and thought it was a stick. I went to pick it up today and saw the button on top of the stick and realized it is an automatic transmission 340 car.
I got it really cheap and there were mudholes all around it so I didn't look closely until today

Hey Jim - sorry for the slow response. Pretty laid back here in the Nest. Looks like you scored well, a 340 bird is a nice ride. Yes, the 4-speed was the only stick available behind the 340 - but you could get the 3-speed behind the 318. If you want a few more details on your car - there is supposed to be a metal tag on the inner fender next to the battery with a bunch of codes on it - if the tag has not been removed. That tag will tell you several things about your car. Additionally, you might get lucky enough to find a broadcast sheet on the underside of one of your seats in the springs. More info on these 73-74 cars can be found at:

I just got this website up and rolling, so there is a lot more I want to add in the future.

Good luck with your new car!
Scott.
