There are two 1972 Roadrunners for sale on Ebay. Amazingly they are consecutive serial numbered but built in two different plants and about 5 months apart. Wonder how that all worked.

H2R213143

H2G and H2R? I'm pretty sure they should've been coming out of the same plant if that close in numbers.

I don't claim to have all of the 1972 RRs serial numbers but out of the 389 numbers so far I've collected over the years. I've seen others that haver close serial numbers with one being built at St. Louis an the other in Canada, and they're months apart. Yeah, it makes me scratch my head too! :?

as an engineer who works in manufacturing, it's possible that when the order was put in for the car (whether internally or externally) depending on where the car's final destination was, it's possible they picked the closest plant, so sequentially numbered cars weren't necessarily made nose to tail at the same plant.

I believe that each plant started off their sequence numbers at 100001 and went up from there without skipping numbers. So you could have two 72 Runners - one that was RM23H2G213142 & one that was RM23H2R213142 - the VINs are different because of the Plant code. The two cars on eBay I think are just a crazy coincidence. They are several months apart because one plant spit out cars at a faster rate than the other. Also remember that these plants usually built several other cars at the same time. So sequence # 123456 at one plant could be a Road Runner, and 123456 at another plant could be a Duster.
Scott.
