Road Runner Nest

Thought I'd share a project I just picked up .
I have started the tear down and ordered the replacement sheet metal.
The car is a 71 SSP with what I think is a unique set of options.
Should be a nice car when completed, if it would be interesting I would like to post as the build go's along.
Here is a picture of the fender tag and the car as it is now.
This was the car in the swap meet area at this years Carlisle.

Looks good so far. Post pictures and or questions. You have a good foundation to make a good car

Exactly. I'm trying to figure out how to simply re-size pictures to upload. That itself is a task for me

Disassembly is mostly done ,down to suspensions now.
I ordered all the sheet metal needed to do the repair. Should be here in two weeks.
Rust wise it looks like floor pan, quarters, trunk floor and drop extensions.
The cowl and firewall, and front inner fenders are good.
I will have to do some front frame repair at the rear k frame mount though.

I'm trying to figure out why somebody would paint an original plum crazy - in violet car black? Probably the same mind set as who painted my car maroon from the original sassy grass green. I guess the high impact colors weren't liked that much in the late 70's and early 80's.

The car has two paint jobs over the in violet, first one was b5 blue then black.
Looks like someone did a mostly complete tear down to do the black.
I would guess the purple would wear on the owner after a while ,can't really hide out at the bar with a purple car. lol

I have a theory on the complete color change cars. 1. it was just a used car. 2. it wasn't nearly as easy to find the color you wanted in your used car as it is today. I think people would get their car, and had the attitude, "but i always wanted it (insert color), so they'd hit earl scheib and $100 later, they'd have the color they always wanted..

Scheib and MAACO had a whole INDUSTRY on cheap paint jobs. I think there were full color changes going on all the time.

Being an old fart who was in my 20's back then the quality of the factory paint wasn't always the greatest, and purple and silver were two of the colors that come to mind that definitely tended to fade the fastest in a short amount of time especially if your car sat outside all of the time. Plus if you kept a car for a couple of years a lot of guys wanted something different, hence a color change to make the car exciting for you again. My ex-brother-in-law had his '69 Daytona custom painted by a customizing shop out here because it was either that or sell it, as he was finally tired of it the way it was. He was the original owner of it. He only regretted doing that later when he sold it when prices started taking off in the mid 1980's as he could of got a couple grand more for it if it had been all stock. It has been restored back to its original Hemi Orange color since he had it.

Unwanted attention from certain people(cops) may also play into it. Not hard to spot a high impact paint car with a strobe on it from a distance. On mine they removed the strobe and didn't replace it.

Had some time to clean the trans and a few small parts. Found the markings on the torsion bars.
After three days in the dip the trans came out very nice.
