Intro and HEMI question

Post by 300vert » Mon Jan 19, 2015 3:11 pm

Hello fellow Roadrunner lovers!

I'm new to the nest and would like to introduce myself and ask a question. My name is Any and I have been driving and enjoying classic mopars for many years. My current summer daily driver is a '69 Chrysler 300 convertible and I am working on restoring a V-code '70 Charger. I have completed body and paint and am working on the drivetrain.

The reason I joined the nest is that I was presented with a neat opportunity. I was offered the chance to buy a '71 hemi Roadrunner. The car is a driver and is currently black but was originally Tawny Gold with a gold strobe stripe. The VIN to the car is RM23R1R154176 and I am wondering if anyone knows any history of the car? The Roadrunner has lived in the Philadelphia PA area since, I believe, at least the late 1970s.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Andy

All I would say is do your homework on the authenticity of this car. Is it a numbers matching car? Do the body numbers match the fender tag? Is there a build sheet? I would post a picture of the fender tag over on mop arts, and let those people look and see if it's fake or not. Let's see some pictures.

Thanks! I'll post over on Moparts.

My initial post is an attempt to learn all I can about the car. It is numbers matching engine, trans, body numbers but I'm trying to learn more. No pictures as of yet but I hope to have some by next weekend.

the VIN RM23R1R154176 decodes as follows:
Description Interpretation Code
Model: Plymouth Belvedere or Satellite R
Price Class: Medium M
Body Type: 2 door hardtop 23
Engine: 426ci V8 dual 4bbl (HEMI) R
Year: 1971 1
Assembly Plant: Windsor, ON (Canada) R
Sequence Number: 154176 154176

The fender tag and a build sheet would tell the options but I am guessing you know that.
The way I read you question is if someone from the area knows the car personally.
Good luck on getting the car cause most of us would do all kind of unspeakable things to have a Hemi.
I said "Don't look Ethel, but it was to late."

Welcome to the Nest Andy!

Are you sure about the VIN number? I believe 154176 is the VON (vehicle order number) for the car. If so, this car came up on forums (yellowbullet I believe) about a year and a half ago (September 2013) when someone found/purchased it in PA. I don't really know much more about the car than that (I do have fender tag info).

I have a registry tracking 71/72 cars, and that's the first I had come across the car.

That looks like the car. VON matches the fender tag info I have and I could have copied the VIN incorrectly. It is cleaned up a lot from those pics and is now wearing weld wheels. Thanks!

As I recall, the person who found and bought it back in 2013 wasn't really a mopar guy. Hopefully in the cleanup they didn't lose any of the originality the car had.

I have a fuzzy photo of the fender tag. PM me with an email address if you want it.

Wow, I'm drooling! Just was wondering what the asking price is? A hemi with a bench seat and column shift, Weird combo. Don't forget to look for the skid plate on the K frame. Only 55 hemi cars produced in 71 if i recall. Hay Andy, Did you happen to have a blue 69 Charger back in the day(late 80's)? I knew a guy named Andy back then that used to hang out on Front street.

I did have a blue Charger but it was a '70 so must be a different Andy. I'll make sure I double check the skid plate. This RR would be a cool looking car painted back to Tawny Gold!

Yup, that's the VIN I have for it. Similar color combo (different interior) for reference

Actually, the bench seat isn't all that uncommon in these cars. Of the 27 hemi cars (71 road runners) I have on file more than 1/3 were optioned with a bench and 6 had the bench/auto combination.

Some more interesting info on this car. I was able to look at the title and the RR was first titled in PA on 12/11/75. The title is branded F which is "out of country" so I guess that means the car was not originally titled in the US?

Interesting....the fender tag is not coded for export or Canada (even though it was built in there - maybe it snuck back over the border)
