1971 Hemi RR goes for 100K+ on Barrett Jackson

Post by sdweatherman » Sat Jan 18, 2014 8:21 pm

Incredibly nice 1971 Hemi RR 4-spd survivor went for $95K + $9500 buyers fee on Barrett Jackson today. Good to see some of our more collectible 4th Gen Plymouths getting a little respect. This one showed very nicely and only has 11K miles on the clock.

Has the same color scheme as my Sebring Plus, but has the upgraded A87 interior with bench seat. I noticed the carpet is black, which seems strange. Mine came with saddle brown carpet.

Well that resets HEMI prices. Owners of these cars seem to think they're worth much more than that now. I believe that car was not as much of a survivor as you might think though.

I agree with you Eric, when I see the hood spring painted body color, that means somebody did a crapy repaint, or something.

Some hood springs were painted body color from the factory.

I hate it when I think I have have seen everything, and then a new one pops up showing something different.

first impression before reading post (looked at pics first) was " not all original" i still agree about hood pop up spring and what would be the code to order a bezel for your ebrake pedal only

Several things held that car back. The B-J bidding definitely responds better to bright colors, consoles and bucket seats. I think the lack of those features out weighed the survivor factor.

Regardless, to suggest a single B-J auction result is a good appraisal of a car's value is foolish. It's just a snap shot that indicates what two bidders were willing to offer that day.

Wrong venue for that car in my opinion.

I would agree with Eric only as far as THIS car was concerned--the price was fairly accurate. I think other Hemi or Six Pack equipped cars more uniquely optioned will do better. And I do agree that Barrett is probably not the right venue for the 1971 Plymouth B-bodies. However, being as I knew of this car's existence AND inspected it in person over 10 years ago, I am pretty certain the claims about it being a survivor--when in reality it was questionable--hurt it. There were tell tale signs that it had work done to it. I was not at the auction, but suspect there was serious doubts as to the "Survivor" aspect. Which leads to other doubts usually! Hey, Eric, I am pretty certain I KNOW where that emergency brake came from!!

I agree other HEMI cars would do better. Still, I don't think they're in the 150-200K range some owners seem to think they are. BUT we see so few of these cars change hands. Does anyone know what the petty blue car sold for a couple years ago, or the butterscotch sunroof car?
Jeff, you should find that new owner and demand your original parts back!

Yes, most of the high dollar cars change hands secretly, with most people not aware. Are some worth $150k or more? Depends on how bad you want it. There are just a handful of what I would deem HIGHLY desirable 1971 B-bodies. Of course, what I think is desirable is probably way different than somebody else. I don't know what the actual prices were paid for the above cars. Most of those involved other cars for trade+cash. Eric, I already replaced the parts with NOS date code pieces--HOWEVER, I would love to have the original spare wheel and jack assembly back!
