Need help 71 rr 383 3 speed

Post by swifteagle » Fri Dec 27, 2013 9:28 pm

Okay guys I need some help I just picked up a 71 rr 383 3 speed on the floor. I can not figure out the trim code m2b5 and the interior code gb7. It is a pretty plan Jane rr and I am trying to figure out what strips it had. And also on the quarter panels above the wheel openings there is three or foor small holes that looks like a emblem went there. And does any one know how meny 3 speed 383 71s were made?

If you scroll down in the Board Index there is a production numbers link, if you haven't already.

Codes I dunno, someone will though.

Best guess...the four holes over the rear wheel were probably for the "road runner' chrome emblems, which means ( I think) it did not have the roof strobe strip.

How many, at least one other, mine had the "turkey leg" 3 as well. :D

Yes, like he said, the holes above the rear wheel were for the Road Runner, if the car had no strobes, and or a vinyl top. My car was optioned out very well, with air grabber, and window louvers, and it came with a 3 speed.Back then a 4 speed was considered high performance, $2,000 a year in 71 was not unusual if you had a bad driving record, so a lot of people got the 3 speed to get around that.I bought my car in 74 when I was 19, and the only way I could have bought ins, was cause of the 3 speed. Strobes were an option. Welcome to the the three legged society. I have my original, but I'm putting a Passon over drive in mine. :)

m2b5 = bench seat bright blue, blue carpet, bright blue door panels, medium blue dash and medium blue headliner. I got the info from The Charger,Road Runner, and Super Bee Restoration Guide by Paul A. Herd.
I am just guessing GB5 is blue also known as B5 Blue.

My car is also a standard 3 speed. From the production numbers listed in the tech info section here on the Nest it looks like there were some where between 700 and 800 3 speeds built in '71.
I said "Don't look Ethel, but it was to late."

Do you have the build sheet? That will tell you exactly what it left the factory with.

Hey swifteagle,
Here is a link to the Hamtramck Registry website that has all sorts of info for our cars. Barry has done an excellent job getting this info out to us car guys. This link shows what your interior should look like. b5 is a medium blue, and b7 / gb7 is a darker blue. If you look through the forum post where forum members have posted pics of their cars, you will see cars with the strobe stripe with the roadrunner decal, and other cars with no stripe that have the physical emblem on the quarterpanel. Good luck with your new ride!

Sometimes you have to look everywhere. Behind the rear seat under the carpet and behind the glove box are the most likely places.

Here, just plug your vin# and it will open the fender tag info on the next page, fill that out and it will tell you all your cars factory options.

The fender tag doesn't tell everything, it won't tell what kind of wheels and tires the car had, and a few other things. Look to see if there is any red paint on any of the brake drums, if yes then it at least came with Ralleys or Road wheels. Yes, the K frame and suspension is the same as a E body, I'm not sure about frame rails, but I would think they are close. The front half of these care is basically a E body structurally.
