New '71 SSP owner!

Hi!

Although I'm a pretty serious Mopar fan, and already the proud owner of an E-body ('72 Challenger) and a handful of A bodies (2 '71 Dart GT's and a '74 Duster), I recently picked up my first B body- a '71 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus. 8)

Not a perfect car by any means, but a pretty cool combo the way it came from the factory. 383/727, 8 1/4, disks, power windows, and a super cool GA4 paint scheme with gunmetal interior, all the way down to the buddy seat.

Anyway, I've been lurking on the forum here for a couple months and thought I would introduce myself. I already spend way too much time over at Cuda-Challenger and Fabo (For A bodies only), and have the same user name over there and on FEBO and now FBBO. I'm also over at Pro-Touring Mopar, but under the handle "Demonizer" over there (Duster to demon clone project).

Here's a little more info on the car...

RP23:
Plymouth Belvedere,Satellite
Premium
2 Door Hardtop

L1E: 383 275HP 1-2BBL 8 CYL
1971

D32: Heavy Duty Automatic Transmission
GA4: Light Gunmetal Poly Exterior Color
P6XA: Trim - Premium, Vinyl Bucket Seats, Charcoal/Black
TX9: Black Int. Door Frames
A30: Build Date: October 30

V4X: Unknown Top Color
U: USA Specifications
A01: Light Package
A04: Basic (Radio) Group
B51: Power Brakes
C21: Center Front Seat Cushion

C55: Bucket Seats
G31: OS RH Manual Standard Mirror
G33: LH Remote Racing Mirror
H31: Rear Window Defogger
H41: Heater w/ Upper Level Vent
L31: Hood/Fender Mounted Turn Signals

M21: Roof drip rail moldings
M25: Wide sill moldings
P31: Power Windows
R11: Radio Solid State AM (2 Watts)
V6W: Longitudinal Stripes, White

Y14: Sold Car
END: End of Sales Codes

And of course, some pictures! As you can see, the SSP has been painted once in the past, but they never did the engine compartment/trunk/interior at all. And there's a little rust in the driver's fender and a bit in the trunk, but everything else for the most part is solid. It does have a mismatched hood, and will soon have a mismatched door thanks to the passenger door having really big dent, but I got the replacement door with the car. She runs pretty well, just in need of some tune up love, not to mention new rims and tires. Unfortunately the SSP isn't my primary project at the moment, but she was far too cool to pass up. :D Hopefully I'll be able to get some things done on the side as I'm working on my Duster.

Thanks! :D

I've got a pretty serious Mopar problem. No show cars, my Challenger is my daily that I've put over 40k miles on in the last 5 years. The rest a projects in various stages, my Duster is the only other "running" car, I just finished a 340/4 speed swap on it and finally fired it. Still a lot of work to do there though.

Always loved the '71 Satellites/Roadrunners/GTX's, couldn't pass up the chance when this one came up. Does actually drive, but she definitely needs some love. Gotta start the hunt for a driver's side fender, just have to love 1 year only parts. :D

Well you can use 72 and cut out the marker light out of the 71. Best looking side marker light of any car in my opinion. Anyone notice the rear defroster motor?

Thanks! Yes it is a pretty well optioned car. Power everything, buckets, disks, defroster, buddy seat, light package, fender mounted turn signals, the works. The only thing it doesn't have is A/C. I think someone was building themselves an easily insurable "Roadrunner" with that 383 2 barrel.

Yeah, I could do that. Not sure if 72's are any easier to find though. I may end up patching the one I have, they make the patches for the rear dog leg, and the front section isn't that bad. Still, wouldn't hurt my feelings to buy a complete one in decent shape.

Ah yes, the defroster. Heater with upper vent, rear defroster, and no A/C. Car was originally sold and lived up in the Vancouver area, so I guess that explains those options.

If your inner fender is intact and not rusted away to nothing a patch panel is the way to go. At some point in my cars history some one brazed the two fenders to the header panel. If that wasn't bad enough they plugged the antenna hole! What where they thinking? I've been fairly lucky and found a nice(71) right fender. Good luck with your ride!

Inner fender is good. Pretty much everything is good except for that fender, the inside lip of the header panel toward the hood, and that little spot in the trunk. The car came with a header panel, and a door to replace the dented passenger door.

I'll probably just end up patching it. But in the meantime I'll keep my eyes out for a decent driver's side fender.

I thought it was a speaker with a large magnet LOL, always thought that the blower was in the center of the window?

The defroster motor is typically mounted in the 5x8 "speaker" opening on the passenger side, and the ducting for the air runs to the center slot in the package tray. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Scott.

Nope, that's right on. The motor mounts in the speaker hole on the passenger side, and then the duct runs to the slot.

Which brings up the problem, what to do with the blower motor if you want to run speakers in the package tray? Especially here in California, where the speakers are a heck of a lot more useful than a rear defroster. Speakers elsewhere require cutting holes, which is really bad for keeping a stock look. The speakers in the package tray can even be mounted from the bottom of the speaker holes, which puts them under the package tray to keep the factory look.
