Holidays and Winter are a tough time to get anything car-wise accomplished. Did catch a couple good weather days in the last 2 months to get one more section completed. The driver's side inner A-pillar brace where the sun visor mounts was ate up with rust on this car from condensation while sitting in a farmer field for years. Fortunately, my bud Jeremy had a white 71 Charger that I helped dismantle waaay back about 12 years ago. I hacked out that corner of the roof before the shell went off to the crusher. Hacked out the old crusty piece that was in my car and prepped the much better replacement. Didn't worry too much about cleaning up the welds perfect - as this area disappears when the headliner goes in.

Winter finally arrived in South Dakota, so not much car action right now. Progress will continue when it gets a little warmer.

Alright, Spring is finally getting here. Picked up a nicer engine stand and a new tool box from Harbor Freight to get ready for this engine assembly. First thing I had to do was to locate one of these timing chain oiler tabby things - and you can find them on eBay for $15. Looked closely at it and said to myself - looks easy enough to make. So there you go - my first reproduction part. Now I can spend that $15 elsewhere. More to come!

My buddy Jeremy came over today and walked me through a little bit of Mopar small block assembly. The little 318 is coming along nicely. I need to finish painting the block, pulleys, and brackets, and need to still locate an Edelbrock 1406 carb and some valve covers.

Scott, a word to the wise.....stay away from the 1406 Edelbrock carb.
It's an emissions carb.
You'll be miles ahead if you go with the new AVS2 Edelbrock carb.

My good buddy had the 1406 on his 69 Dart with a 340 for years.
No matter how much we fiddled with the metering rods and springs, he was never happy with it.
The engine has a cam and headers and has 3:55 out back.....couldn't light the tires to save his life....
Also, that carb would boil the fuel out of it in no time and he had to crank it over a thousand times to get fuel back up and into it.
Plus, it stank up his garage....

So, I suggested the AVS2 and he bought one.
Literally, out of the box...plop it on the intake, setup the idle mixture and curb idle & take it out for a test drive.
Now it lights the tires with no problem......score!
Also no more boiling the fuel and no more stinky garage.
Google the reviews for the AVS2 - so far everyone is impressed with it including me and I hate Edelbrock carbs..

If you want to stick with the older carb then get the 1405 as its more performance orientated whereas the 1406 is not.

Interesting, this is the first bad review I have heard on the 1406. I have heard that the secondaries do dry up quickly when stored, so you have to get on it a couple times when you first get it out to get the initial hesitations out of the way. But once you get that done its golden. I also saw that it is incredibly easy to swap out the metering rods so that fine tuning is a breeze. I will check out the AVS2 tho - it sounds like a good option.

I got the bottom end very cheap and already assembled, so I will save a bunch of money just putting it together and enjoying the driver that I have always wanted. It was my buddy Jeremy's race engine that he used for part of a season on the dirt track. It has a 340 cam, and has some very fresh swirl port heads. Combine that with the aluminum 4 barrel and a nice carb, and it will be putting out a little more than the stock 230HP it was originally born with. I do have another 318 block that I will likely build to 350+ HP down the road.
