Fender Tag
Hello everybody,
i have just finished restoring my 1972er roadrunner/gtx and wonder if somebody could help me on some fendertag decoding issues. I could decode any numbers appart the followong: M23
Actually i found out that only 219 cars with the 4 speed manual transmission were build in 1972. Does anybody know how i can find out how many of those cars meet my specifications (like black/black trim and so on)
As i am based in vienna/europe and fairly new in the roadrunner field please apologize my lack of perfect english and may be some questions that might be unexperienced.
Thanks
Christian

Thanks for your response!
Undortunately I did not fin a broadcast sheet in the car.
Would you know where I can find out how many were build in black.
Below I added the fender tag decoding of my car if anyone is interested.
Another thing you might have experience with: when i open the windows the passenger cabin fills with exhaust fumes. I checked the trunk weatherstrip but it seemes to be ok....
Thanks

Does the car have any rust holes in the trunk floor pan or anywhere else that the exhaust can get in?Another thing you might have experience with: when i open the windows the passenger cabin fills with exhaust fumes. I checked the trunk weatherstrip but it seemes to be ok....
I looked up how many 71's came in black some time ago cause i got a parts car that was originally black. I was wondering the same thing. You don't see to many in black. Well the # was low compared to the rest with exception of some of the high impact paints. I would imagine it wouldn't be to much different for 72. Those little white books that Galen Govier sells have all kind of info in them. well worth the $ if you want detailed production #'s etc..

Oh yea, We like pics.

Re: Fender Tag
I looked up your VIN number in the '72 RRs I have written down over the years, and I had it in my information. Which included the fender tag. It shows a N23 code, not M23. Which would be electronic ignition.

Re: Fender Tag
No such package, there was never a package or option officially titled “GTX” for model years 72-74’. Simply, if you ordered a Road Runner with one of the optional 440 engines, the car was called a “Road Runner GTX” ,using the RM vin prefix, came with dual badging and a higher trim level similar to the 71’ “Satellite GTX”.71ChallengerSE wrote:just has a gtx package.

It really IS a small, small Mopar world.

Re: Fender Tag
You may think that because a '72 RR is a RR/GTX model that it has a higher trim level. Such is not the case. I've got serial numbers for '72 RR/GTXs that have the base el cheapo bench seat interior in them. It's the 440 in the car that makes it a RR/GTX (serial numbered), nothing else.

Re: Fender Tag
Didn't say that, as with previous models named with the GTX suffix, I was referring to exterior trim primarily, belt, sill & wheel lip moldings specifically. May be an ordering coincidence as I can’t locate any backup in the order information that would support an automatic tie in to the engine option, but have yet to see a u-coded 72’ without them, now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve seen a bench seated 72’ u-code either. These moldings (except the sill) are part of the A87 décor group along with the Deluxe steering wheel. In my car’s case, it had a standard wheel, not so sure it was ordered with the Décor group yet had a full set of moldings.

Re: Fender Tag
Generally the majority of the 72 RR/GTXs have buckets & deluxe trim. But when you run into a naked one, it's sort of a jolt. Here's numbers for one that was on ebay in the last couple of years. Pretty rusty, and needed complete restoration: E86 D21 RM23 U2G 184136; GF7 B2F6 GF7 403 313008; GF7 U M21 N23 N41 N76; R11 26 END. At least it was a 4-spd car, and came with a radio. I was always sort of disappointed that only the 4-spd RR/GTX came with a Dana rearend. The automatics came with an 8 3/4 rearend in them. The metallic blue 4-speed RR/GTX I had years ago didn't come with M23 trim on it. So I installed that on it. The kid I sold the car to didn't like M23 trim, and so he removed it, and filled all the holes. Wish I had that car today. It was a lot of fun.

Re: Fender Tag
M23 trim? Do you mean belt moldings(M31)? As determined above, pretty sure M23 does not exist. I don’t care for them as well and couldn’t stomach having screw/clip holes in the panels/doors to secure them correctly. I welded all the holes closed and removed the studs. I have considered ways to install them without drilling holes should the urge to be correct overtake my dislike of their appearance someday.
