I almost got it

Post by GTXS » Thu Mar 15, 2012 2:53 pm

Hey guys, I'm kinda new here but not new to 71 to4 b bodies. Over the years I have been trying to perfect a product and process to re-apply the chrome around the clusters, vents, ect in our cars (well any car for that matter). It has been hit and miss for some years. Now I think I finally got it. For a long time I couldnt get get it to lay down very well, then when I figured that out it wouldnt cure. If I added anything to the mixture I would end up messing something else up. It was just a crazy circle. I need to apply one more coat of chrome today then I will post pictures. So far it looks good, cures pretty fast, lays down good. The only concern that I have is how good it will stay applied to the plastic. My latest tests were perfect with a similar plastic so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This does not play well with any kind of plastic primer or paint, so I had to add adhesion promoter and like always that messed everything else up. I have been working on this for over 15 years on and off.
Well im keeping my fingers crossed. Im getting impatiant and I want to unmask it and see what it looks like. OK! pictures to come tomorrow at the latest (make that saturday at the latest).

WOW, first I had to resize it then convert it to jpeg. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I have to clean it up a bit. But its starting to look nice. I got too impatiant (sp?) and took the masking off yesterday and I messed the chrome up in a couple of places but to be honest I have a couple nos bezels that have thier fair share of knicks, imperfections and runs.

You dont want to know what it cost. LOL! This was mixed from scratch. I know a guy at a paint company. He helped me get my hands on whatever I needed. I probably have enough left to do a handful of projects this size. Im gonna do a few things and see how they hold up. If everything works out I plan on making more for future projects. Maybe I found something to do when I retire.
