Tire size question

Post by cjanicke » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:13 pm

Want to try some mickey thompson ET Street Radials P295/65R15 on my 72. Anyone try to use tires this big in the factory wheel openings? I don't have a tire fitment tool, and I live in rural Kansas (probably won't find one). What is the biggest tire some of you guys have tried? Thanks for any help. My car is just about ready for the road after a 10 year hiatus. I will share some photos.

4.56 rears - will be about 3500 at 70 mph with the 30 inch tall tires. Lucky for me, the interstate is 40 miles away! Just a play car, not going racing

I was just wondering if you were going to drive it very far,or if you had a trailer ect. I don't have one and unless someone volunteers it will have to get there under it's power. I'm gona try a passon over drive, i may not like but who knows.I really like to see what other people do so i can get ideas.

I have 295 50 15's on a 10" rim with 5" backspacing. Its so close I need to roll the fender lip slightly because if the car is loaded with people and you go around a corner and hit a bump, the tires will rub. If the rims had 5.5" BS, I'd be golden as there is enough room at the spring.

I just ordered them so I will know hopefully by the weekend. I want the taller tire to get some of the gearing back. I used to have the BFG T/A's in the 295/50r15 (no traction), then went to Hoosier 295/60-15 in the QT DOT wrinkle wall tire (great traction but seriously squirrelly). Clearance was close but seemed to work with 8" wheel with 4.5" BS (no offset). These being taller but radial, I hope fit will be okay. I looked at another forum and searched there as well. Too many guys there didn't like the tall tires. This is my car not their's, I want to know if the tires will fit the car, not if they fit their stereotype. The differing opinions are what progress (or regress) the hobby.

These were 295s on the back of my RR when I had the cop car wheels on it. Not quite as WIDE as what you're talking about, but still a pretty big tire. Filled the wheel opening pretty well. :D

How is the relocation kit working out? I had read some negative reviews about it, but don't really know what the issues were supposed to be. I would think moving the springs in would change the reaction of the suspension due to leverage differences, but that may be solved by stiffer spring sets. Does the hookup and wheel-hop seem to be the same as before?

i havent had any problems i put super stock springs on it at the same time.as far as hooking up the car has a blower on it . i think the only thing that would help my traction is slicks and then id probably find a weak spot in the motor :D besides the leaf spring relocation i also got wheels with a shallower offset, it really looks good with that big of tires that sit all the way up in the wheelwell, jeff

Awesome! nice ride. Man I'd love to go for a burn in that. Do you have a hood with a cut out for it?

I can't think of a body style, well maybe an E body, that screams for meaty tires these these do

Tires are on. They fit really well on the left side, but the right side is much tighter. Couldn't get the car out for the alignment because of snow. Gonna wait til next week.
