Where are we on the 'GTX badge' thing...

...for certain???

This year is the 30th year I've been into Mopars. I've owned a lot of them. Back then...there were no 72-74 "GTX" cars. We all knew the GTX (and the Charger R/T) ended in 71, period, and we were OK with that. If a 72-74 Roadrunner had a 440, it was just called a "Roadrunner with a 440". In the last 10+ years, there have been all these 72-74 "GTX"s for sale, or Roadrunners with the "GTX option". This is still a weird term to me. RS died in 1971. Now, I will admit, I have not seen all the sales brochures and related literature. From what I remember, the 74 Roadrunner advertised the GTX option, is that correct?

I am sure you guys can clarify some of this for me. I know Mopars better than most people know the backs of their own hands, but I would like to see actual proof of the 'GTX option' and badges:

- actual literature
- factory photos
- pics of survivor cars
- Chrysler manuals
- etc

People that aren't real Mopar people (flippers, dealers, body shops, Chevy guys :D ), advertise a car by the badges, and what they are told. I personally, like these cars the way Chrysler built them, not the way "Bill's Garage" built it. I understand that some customizing to your own car is cool, hey, it's your car, right? However, I've had many people buy parts from me for their "Charger R/T", or whatever, and I have literally burst their bubble and told them flat out, "Your car is NOT an R/T because....". I hate seeing people get burned.

I'm NOT saying, that's the ONLY reason for the GTX badge thing, but it has happened. I think a GTX badge on a 73 RR with a 440 is cool, because I know what it represents, I just want to know the facts about it. Thanks guys!!

Here is how chrysler phrased it for 72 In the parts books they list GTX badges where they would be on the car. There is no Option code for this and I think that is where some of the confusion comes from when people use the term GTX option. It is simple asthis, you order a 72,73,74 Roadrunner with a 440 engine you get GTX badges on the car.

Thanks Larry. OK, so we can call the 72 a 'Roadrunner GTX". What was the badging on the car from the factory?

Both. They have RR badging, and GTX emblems on the car. The GTX emblems are on the front fenders, and they're sometimes on the trunklid on the '72s. I say it that way. As I have seen original '72 RRs with it missing on the trunklid. Must of been a Friday afternoon built car! On the '73 & '74 the GTX emblems are right above the 440 decal numbers on the hood. There's no GTX emblem in the interior.

So, on the 72 they are on the lower fender and trunk lid, is that right? Any pics? Never seen one in real life.

On 73-4, just the hood? Pics?

Correct for a standard hood car. GTX eblems on fenders and 440 call out on hood.

FYI
Only 340 and 440 cars got hood call outs on stadard hood in 1972, the 400 equipped cars had no 400 call out just a reflective tape insert.

You are saying that air grabber cars should have 440 on the fender?

"flippers, dealers, body shops"

They are among us... :stirpot:

"Hey why is it taking so long to get your car done?"

" I work on it myself..."

My opinion on badges is your either about them for the looks or your about them for the numbers.A car pulls into a show you have those who jump up because of its logos/badges,or you have those that jump up because they see what the logos/badges are on,thats what they like. Packages are cool of course, but they are all on the same bodies. When it comes down to it,people get ripped off, disappointed, tricked over just decorations. If you ask someone who is strictly about numbers and wants the "best" and just wants to deal with the over rated they would say otherwise.

That reminds me...Galen never replied back to my email I sent back in July.
