Hemi went away after 71
Big block went away after 72 or 73 season
74 and later small block Most everyone ran Chargers not Satellites 73-77
If you watch MCG MoprTV they interview Richard Petty.
http://moparcollectorsguide.com/moprtv/index.php

He states like the 64 Plymouth vs Dodge that the 72 Plymouth vs Dodge that one body style was usually better than the other.
In 64 it was the Plymouth and in 72 it was the Dodge.
Half way throught the 72 season Petty ran Dodges on the super speedways because they were faster.
Interesting though all his wins in 1972 were in PLYMOUTH not Dodges!
His favorite car was the 74 Charger because they ran it so long they got good at setting the car up and it was a balance aero car too i guess.

This is what they said over on my Moparts post

"The displacement limit was 429.999 CI. The 429 call out reflects a slight overbore. A number of Mopars ran "429 CI" on the hood.
You could also explain it that they matched what the factory Fords had on the hoods. "

"I remember hearing my dad talk with some of the USAC stock car guys - I'm not sure who it was, but he said the blocks were standard bore, and cranks were standard throw, they just put 429 CID on the hood to mess with the Ford guys."

"I've heard that Nichels put 429 on the hood of the Lorenzen car to poke his nose at Chrysler since they basically dumped him for Petty."
