I still laugh at that Carlisle shirt. They used my dad's dart on it without us even knowing it. The guy that did our showboard was used to provide the artwork for the carlisle programs and shirts.

Would love to get Petty to sign my insert on my 4 speed console.

I'd be the one who did the Carlisle shirt. FWIW, your dad's Dart wasn't planned to be on the shirt to start with--I had a '63 Polara in that spot. But the folks producing the shirts for Carlisle couldn't get a '63 Polara through licensing at Chrysler so the Dart went on there in it's place. Also FWIW, I got the nod to do the shirts at the last second because the previous art was HORRIBLE. Ed the show manager refused to let them use that art on the shirts. So doing the art for that year's ACN shirt was a total last minute thrash. This year's shirt is different, the art is brand new and produced specifically for the ACN shirt.

Finally, and I don't mean to be a butt here, but I own the rights to my art. This point is often misunderstood by the owners of the cars I've drawn. That means I can use the art wherever I like and I don't have to ask "permission". People misunderstand this because they own the car, but nevertheless I retain the rights to reproduce my art. You'll see information to this effect on the "How We Work" area of my website. Also, I would have sworn I had informed your dad I intended to use the art on the shirt and encouraged him to attend Carlisle to see the shirts firsthand. If I'm not recalling that correctly I apologize.

But this is the reason I put the copyright and year on the art by my signature...

I realize I make a gray area with my art when I give my customers the file to reproduce as they like. That's part of the service I provide, but it might blur the distinction on the ownership of the art. Believe me though, you won't find many if ANY other artists who give their customers a file of the art for their personal use. That is a MAJOR benefit to my clients and is probably also misunderstood and undervalued.

Hope I've caused no hard feelings with this commentary, or with the use of the art on the shirts.

Woah woah. First of all, sorry for any misunderstanding that just happened. I meant absolutely no harm or bad mouth towards you. Me and my father were greatly honored that you used it. We did not get a chance to go to Carlisle because of a death in the family. We had a friend up there looking for shelby dakota parts, couldn't find any, and sent us two shirts with a copy of the program. Our friend had no idea the yellow dart was my fathers and we didn't know it was on the shirt. So when we opened up the box he shipped to us, we at first though it was a joke or gag he was pulling on us, but he had never seen my father's dart before.

Me and my father both know that you retain the rights to your artwork. I must have come off as negative in my previous post and I apologize for that. You did an amazing job on the artwork for my red 80' Malibu as well.

I didn't know you were a member on this site. Had I known that, I would have thanked you long ago for both the artwork on my malibu and my father's dart. I plan on paying you again to do artwork on my roadrunner once the restoration is complete, if you don't mind.

It's all good. Like I said I didn't mean to be a butt... That Carlisle artwork was so last minute that all I could do was use art I already had. And like I said, adding your dad's Dart was one of the last frantic revisions to a frantic last minute design.

I'm not just a member here I'm one of the founding members and moderators. That and a buck will get you a cup of coffee about anywhere but Starbucks.

Always ready to do more art. Right now I'm slammed again getting ready for Carlisle, but once the show is out of the way life might get less hectic again. I'm hopeful anyway... Take care!

Now back to the op's subject... it always amazes me how gaudy some of the art of the King appears. Who would really want to drive around in a Challenger convert with Petty's mug smeared all over it? Don't mean to disrespect the King cuz I've always loved the guy, but seriously... Maybe it's cuz I prefer more subtle stuff than what's pictured here.

Yeah bruce I knew you are a mod and founding member. But I didn't know who you were outside of the forum.

As for the artwork, I will agree with you on that Bruce. I really like the vintage artwork of Petty back in the 50's and 60's, but having a modern artwork of his face on the side of the challenger is definately not in my taste.

Nah man, I'm not girding for war. I don't think there are many who are bigger fans of the King than I--more rabid or more obsessive maybe... But he's the whole reason I own a '71. His '71 is etched in my memory from back in the day, and is a major contributing factor to my love of these cars. He put them in the Winner's Circle for crying out loud! It's where '71 Road Runners first registered on my psyche. If I had known about this show and had gone I would have had him sign the air cleaner on my RR.

But I'm an artist with my own taste and my own (strong) opinions--I think Sam Bass, the "official" artist of NASCAR sucks. And I think the art of the King and his cars (including spectacular crashes!) on the sides of new Challenger convert is tacky. Give me that car with a nice monochromatic paint job and some SUBTLE graphics along with some nice NON-ALLIGATOR skin leather and I'd dig it. As it is, not so much... It is what it is, some might dig it, others including me might not.

AS for Pat and his dad, I wish y'all could get up to Carlisle one day. You'd LOVE it! And to Steve the OP in this thread, I apologize for hijacking it so badly!

It was a pretty small show considering the size of his fan base. I think they wanted it that way. Not much advertizing, mostly word of mouth. I heard about it last minute from Facebook. There was still a frenzied mob attacking RP for autographs!
