new to the nest
Well I have a question just got a 1974 road runner clone with a 8 3/4 with a 391 open and was wondering if a 318 will be enough to move the car?

Yes it will be fine as an every day cruiser or driver.
Not a drag strip or road coarse race car.
Lots of healthy 318's out there.
Some cam, 4bl intake, GOOD heads, and headers with flow through mufflers and U should be fine.

I second CtownRunner. You can get decent hp out of a 318 with just bolt on goodies. I plan to keep a 318 in my car. A 340 cam, 4bbl intake and carb, 302 swirl port heads, and headers are on the list for my rig. If you want a little more performance, a healthy 360 crate would be the ticket. That would bolt right in. Good luck with whatever you decide! Oh ya, how about a pic or two of your ride? Scott.

Welcome beep-beep , even if you dont beef up your 318 it will still be a good driver/runner,
May not get you those low low et times but think of all the gas you will be saving,,,,

Welcome to the nest I had a 318 in my 72 and it was great for using it as a daily driver grocery getter it was pretty reliable and never gave me any issues. However after a couple of years I got bored of it and wanted something that would make it get up and go. So out with the 318 and in with a 440 and now I am really enjoying it. I think it is a little work to put in a 383-440 in you car, My 72 was and easy switch.
To get a car going has much to do with Torque more then horespower anyway. You know what they say.....You can't beat cubic displacement (LOL)

Sometimes I get to feeling that if Xmas, Fathers Day and my Birthday did not exist, then aftershave too would not exist.

Beautiful runner!
I kept the 318 In my Satellite.Got a cam,modified carb,pretty soon it will have a pair of headers.Mine sounds great though right now and has more power.

thank you. anyone have a dual plane for sale for my 76 318 truck motor and what size carb. should i run im also running headers 3 inch duals flowmasters that lives near Akron Ohio.

If you want to put a really good intake on your motor then go with the Edel brock air gap and a 600 cfm edel brock carb have one on my runner and she runs great. Also have had the motor bored 40 over, ported polished, 3 angle valve job, 9and a half to 1 kieth black pistons, balanced, line bored. and i get 20 miles to the gallon on the freeway, i have 323 8and a quarter rear end.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING>>>>>>>>MAKE SURE THE 318 is in good shape ...low miles etc or you will KILL it.
The 318 was never meant to be a high performer and I am sorry you can dress a 5 to look like a 9 but in the end it is a 5 be sure that it is in top shape. You can do a lot to improve it but look at the cost of just buying a bigger engine unless you want to keep it original. My guess is that even if you try to improve the 318 in the end it will disapoint you. Nice RR now make it ROAR

thanks moparmike i was just gonna put a dual plane and carb on it and headers cause it does have a 391 gear so should be good till i get a 440 in her
