The Curious Yellow b*tch is back

Post by 471Magnum » Sun Oct 25, 2009 8:56 pm

It was only a matter of time before she reappeared:

Looks like it's grown a few options in the last couple of years. Most notably the vinyl top (WTF?!?!)

As expected, a few inaccuracies in the description. The original restoration is probably almost 10 years old. The motor certainly isn't factory spec (assuming it's the one I built).

To the credit of the next owner, he picked up where I left off, and took the car a bit further.

Obviously being sold on consignment, but not by the guy I sold it to. I shipped it off to MA.

Does the VIN match up to your old GY3 car? While I really like the look of old Mopars with vinyl tops, I am in the minority as most guys don't like and them and I have not seen anyone adding a vinyl top to a car that originally was not coded for one... But, you never know

It's my old car. No doubt. Checked the VIN.

Aren't too many around.

I didn't recognize it initially with the vinyl top. Once I saw it was a 4 speed "I" code, with no power nuthin', other than an R35 radio, I knew it had to be.

Weird... the listing at the top says "1971 Plymouth GTX 440 V8 4BBL, 4-Speed, PS, PB, I Code" and it looks like it now has a power brake booster but I dont see a power steering pump anywhere. I find that sooo odd that they put a vinyl top on it when it isn't even coded, I could see adding power steering and power brakes just to make it easier to drive but still WTF with the changes.

Did you sell it to a chevy guy or something?

{edit} Opps I just spotted this
Every inch of our premium quality GTX has been meticulously and correctly restored to factory + specifications. Complete frame-off, drive train-apart restoration was completed in early 2008. At that time the original (B11) 10” heavy duty drum brakes were upgraded to power with front discs and power steering was added.

The installation of the vinyl top baffles me. That's sinful.

I don't see the power steering. It had a quick ratio manual steering box when I had it. It was an absolute bitch to steer at low speed while working the stick.

I guess with a car that only 327 were made, there's a good chance you will end up bumping into it again :D While I think the black top looks great on GY3 cars, I still think it is nuts to put one on where it does not belong

BTW- Jeff from Legendary Auto Interiors was selling his personal GY3/GY3 '71 GTX last year or so, also a manual steering car, but it had power discs which automatically came with the A34 Super Track Pak and it also had the N96 Air Grabber option. Anyone here on the Nest buy it? I was thinking hard about it before I ended up with my '70 6bbl 'Cuda 8)

I traded a few emails with Jeff regarding his car. I considered purchasing it, but it needed quite a bit of work considering the asking price.

I also remember trading emails with the guy that actually bought it. He planned to restore it, and claimed he also owned the most highly optioned 71 GTX.

I'll have to dig through my archives.

Yes it did. I remember one of the pics showed quite a bit of rot in the cowl on the passenger side that he did not mention when we spoke on the phone (I think from a mouse nest). The floors were absolutely perfect though! Cool car, but certainly not as nice as he made it sound  I think he would have done $20k on the price IIRC?

Sounds about right on the price.

It was a pilot car IIRC. Radio delete. Definitely a rare one. Had been repainted Lemon Twist. Just needed too much work.

Somebody is going to get a really nice car if/when they buy my old one. I just don't think the market will come anywhere near supporting that asking price on a non-numbers car. I can think of two 4 speed N96 cars that I would consider to be of equal or better quality that struggled to get $35K.

By chance, did you save any pics/info on that car?

http://www.plymouthgtx.net/featured/197 ... tx-1.shtml

and there use to be info on it at http://www.gtxregistry.com/ but that site has been down for like 7 months now... =( which is a bummer cause if I had any idea the GTXregistry was going to go away I would have saved all the info I could from the site.

{edit} I'm getting old and senile I thought TX9GTX was asking about the one in the auction not another car

That's the one :D Wasn't the car missing the fender tag? After looking at the Broadcast Sheet again, I really wish I worked on buying his X a little harder... Great car, 4-spd 4.10 Dana 15x7 ralleys, high impact color, and radio delete (well, no radio option I should say 8) )!

I don't recall if it had the fender tag. Might be able to tell from some of the pictures.

Gonna get me another one of these... someday... but not anytime soon.
