I found a set of 906 heads, for what I believe is a pretty good price...so here goes. I'd be putting them on a 440.

906 heads, hardened seats, new valves, been run in a '71 challenger 383 car until the owner decided to get a set of indys. been in a box for a year. I've seen them personally. they look bolt and go.

how much? any ideas?

i don't think there's a big market for iron heads anymore with the low cost of aluminum now. i just sold a set of 452s - same as 906, but with hardened seats for $80. mine had been off the car for a few years, though and you could bolt em on like they were, but eventually they'd need work.

on the other hand, i bought a set of iron heads from aerospace or aerohead, something like that, with hardened seats, 3 angle valves, HD valve springs to .509", bronze guides, etc. completely rebuilt for $500 about 5 years ago for my 440. now, i hear of some people spending as much as a set of aluminum heads rebuilding iron ones. not much help, i know, but some more info for you

let's just put it this way...he's asking 300 bucks.

BTW...where are all these aluminum heads for cheap??

With standard size valves, $300 is top dollar for a lightly used set.

Don't get me wrong, you can't get a valve job for that price, but it's pretty much what the market seams to be willing to pay these days.

I've got one set of fairly fresh 346s that I'd love to get $150 for, but I haven't had any takers.

899 is really really tempting...but if I offer dude 225 for the 906's and he takes it...I've got 675 for pistons, rods, cam, carb, intake...etc...all of which I need.

I like the way you think. The heads may be a limiting factor in the build but if you match the rest of the components you will still have a STRONG reliable motor for the street.

You got me thinking the same thing now for my 383. Cheap head upgrade is still an upgrade.

i was looking through my newest mopar magazine - the jet-x issue. i thought my iron heads had something to do with Indy. anyhow, aerohead is with the Indy head advertising and they still sell complete rebuilt iron heads for $499, so being used, take off a bit, if they're still in good shape. personally, i don't think the 906 heads are that big of an improvement anyway. i think they only time they come into play is for "numbers" people.

if they are in bolt-on condition, 300 doesn't seem too bad, if they're not in need of valve stem seals or other work.

How much horsepower, approximately of course, would those $899 add by just swapping them for 906 heads? Would they increase the torque any or is it just a top end thing?

it's all about your combo really...i think aluminum headed motors need 10:1 or so to run right. i think the ideal compression ratio with aluminum heads is 10.5:1
