Air grabber flapper resto

Post by TX9GTXN96 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 1:15 pm

Here is one of the little projects that I have finished so far :D

The GTX is an original N96 car, and I want the hood to look and function as new, so I decided to rebuild/replate every part of the assembly. The actuator is going to be sent out to Wilson's for a rebuild and all of the related hardware has been sent to Restorick for replating.

Pics of the finished assembly:

As mentioned, I sent the parts to RestoRick to have him chemically test the parts for the correct plating as my parts had oxidized enough to make the right plating type hard to determine.

The main rod, spring return bracket, the actuator bracket, and the hinge arms were all black zinc.
The roll pins, flap spring were clear zinc.
The end caps and flapper door were air cleaner lid orange (I used RestoRick's PPG Concept paint, matched very well to the original color)

If you attempt to do the same with your's, make sure you take LOTS of detailed pics first as it is very easy to install the parts in the wrong order/backwards and it is a pain to knock the roll pins in and out without doing any damage to the fresh plating

Not that I dont appreciate seeing these pictures, I do, its just whenever I see these types of amazing restorations, I despair at the condition of mine.

NOrrTH,

No need to despair, it actually is a relatively easy project. More time consuming than anything elese while waiting for the parts to come back from replating. The material cost is low, the correct paint from RestoRick is $25. for the 1/2 pint can and the plating work was probably around $50.00, although I don't know the exact amount since I had tons of other hardware done at the same time. I used a combination of paint stripper and a trip to my glassbead cabinet to strip the painted end caps and flapper door. The original paint was really on there!!! If you don't own a blast cabinet, most machine shops will let you use their's for a six pack of cold ones

I'm hoping to abuse a friend of mine over this winter to help me start restoring. I'd like to get my dash done and tidy up the engine bay, get it back to stock.
