when you pull your cam, your lifters would fall through the bottom, which isn't a big deal i guess, especially if you have your crank, rods, etc. removed. i don't remember how i got mine out, but they weren't too difficult - i think i just reached with my finger and pushed them up through the lifter bore, even with the cam in. idk when they started the plastic gear, but my 76 motor had it - maybe started in mid 70s, and may have just been a big block thing...not sure. should have a pretty good lil 318 when it's done

everyone has their opinion, and i still have none on paint prep for an engine...on mine this time, since everything was out, i used brake/parts cleaner on everything that wasn't hot-tanked along with lots of passes with different wire wheels on drills to get all the old paint and grime off.

I figured that because not every engine is in the same condition so one idea wouldn't work with every engine.

I just spent the whole day cleaning the block on both sides. There was some sort of what seemed to be body mud splattered a little on one side ,but whats weird was it was painted over by the original paint.I got it all off it was just weird. After cleaning that i notice my block is banged up pretty bad, broken pieces off some of the ears and just battle scars everywhere.hahaha.Ill post pics later.

you could pull a "me" and start getting everything painted - i had everything painted up apart, unlike most who paint after assembly. mostly because i wanted to do it that way and partly because i had 3 months to burn waiting to get my block and crank back

I was thinking that...I have never painted an engine before Im not sure what is a better method,i suppose its personal preference.

yeah, idk...i figured i'd have much better coverage being able to move the parts and get into areas i otherwise wouldn't be able to (like between the w.p housing and timing cover, under the intake...)...main difference is that you can actually tell where my gaskets are i guess instead of being covered with paint, but nothing real noticeable. i took up 6' or so of a 15" deep shelf or so of all my painted parts waiting to go on...dad wasn't too happy about that - now it's stocked with spray paint, oil, etc.

hahaha yeah.My dad has done all of this stuff before so Im basically letting him school me through.(although somethings i want to make sure just in case,he hasn't done an engine since the 70s )Any way i was thinking it may be better in the long run painting it disassembled, because if you painted it all together you would risk chipping paint taking the engine back apart, correct?Ill have to look up some painting tips.
