Plymouth dropped the GTX after 1971.
But 440 4v engines were still made available in b-bodies for 72-74.
As a marketing cue 440 4v meant GTX to the Plymouth brand.
Therefore you got a Road Runner with GTX tags when you ordered a 440 4v.
Seems Dodge did not follow this line of thinking.
Since the R/T was dropped after 1971 and the Rallye Charger performance model.
Rallye was an option on any Charger (except SE’s) with all engine types.
So there never was a Charger Rallye R/T with an optional 440 4v engine.
Funny you could order a 440 4v on the luxury Charger SE but never on a SSP (I guess Plymouth wasn’t a luxury car brand).
1972 was the last year for:
440 6v (auto only)
440 4v with manual trans as an option (with the maditory 9 ¾ axle)
1973-74 440 4v cars were all auto trans.

Re: 72 rr gtx
Oh c'mon, let's revisit this!
I would like to know why there are original examples of each location. Maybe different build plants or an early vs late thing. I'm not as well schooled on 72 cars but I'd like to get to the bottom of this.

Re: 72 rr gtx
maybe there were mistakes on the line...guy was used to putting the rr decal in the far corner and then "OOPS" it's supposed to get the gtx emblem, so they had to put out a bulletin showing if you messed up the decal where to put the emblem ??? the gtx emblem placed to the left and above the decal looks pretty awkward, where to the right and down looks pretty good...plus, they are called "roadrunner gtx" not "gtx roadrunner"

Re: 72 rr gtx

This picture of what would appear to be original paint RR/GTX with V21/V25 spripes, supports the written 71-72' Road Runner (no mention of the RR/GTX) 1†x 1†guidelines supplied with today’s Mopar Performance repo circle bird decal #P3672656:
“1971 Decklid Circle Bird decal: 1†above bottom edge. 1†inboard of the right edge.
1972 Decklid Circle Bird without Deck stripes decal: 1†above bottom edge. 1†inboard of the right edge.
1972 Decklid Circle Bird with Deck stripes decal: 1†above bottom of main body of right stripe. 1†inboard right side of main body of stripe edge.â€
Both the decal and the “GTX†emblem appear to be ~1†above the main body of right “v25†stripe and about 1†inboard of the outer edge. If you then use the same guidelines for RR/GTXs without the V21/V25 stripes, both the decal and emblem would be about 1†up from the lower edge of the deck lid and 1†inboard of the right edge. Logic would dictate that the two nameplates would be placed in such an order that when read together would read Road Runner/GTX, or 4 or 5 o’clock of the circle bird.
A review of the last thread; Member 72RDrnner’s, owned since new, RR/GTX had the “GTX†emblem on the left side of the deck lid and the circle bird on the right in the standard 1â€x1†location. Eric posted a picture of what is said to be a RR/GTX without a “GTX†emblem and a circle bird in the standard 1â€x1†right side location. Based on this, it’s pretty hard to discount the left side “GTX†position altogether. A few members, had placed their “GTX†at 11 o’clock to the circle bird as the 1972 Parts manual appears to show it diagramed, again however, past professional experience with those books proved time and again to be nothing more than approximate trim location guides only. After 37 years I have yet to see one original car (or a photo of) with the emblem in that 11 o’clock location originally. The parts book diagram does indicate both the circle bird decal and the ‘GTX†emblem were intended to be located on the right side of the deck lid. Would love the see the engineering drawings for the 72’ RR/GTX.
Speaking of 72-74’ RR/GTXs, anyone want to take on the subject of whether or not they can rightfully be referred to as a GTX? A WIW inquiry over on moparts recently about a 72’ GTX had a response of 1 of none, no RS in the vin, no GTX. Any takers here on that one?
