Junkyards: It's not the 80s or 90s anymore

Post by 72 RR fan » Sun Dec 07, 2008 10:43 am

I went yeasteday to a junkyard in NW Georgia that has a lot of old cars. I had heard from a friend that they had a few 71-72 Satellites now in stock. It's always fun on the hunt, but sadly, there was only one 72 model...pretty darn beat, and pretty rusty...the hood and trunk lid were the only okay panels. I kinda wanted a driver's door. It wasn't rusty, but had a pretty good dent! It did come from a 340 RR! Wish that car was there! I saw a 73 74 Satellite, but it was real bad off. It sure was fun to look...I miss the days when you could find your parts in the junkyard, but then again, I don't want to see any scrapped either, LOL!

Part 2:
The fellow who owns the yrd also had this car, a 70 Super Bee...for sale at $3000...but the vin did not agree..Coronet..no fender tag....I like these alot...it'd make a nice clone. If it were a Bee at $3K, I'd had to get it.....lot of parts and trim....eng/trans out of car..if anyone want it let me know

Part 3:

After scooting fom the yard..I laughed to myself at spotting a 72 Satellite on the way home. It was stored behind a business...Looked as though someone must have painted it, then parked it. The business was closed so no one to ask about it. I didn't want to snoop around, so I took this pic fom my truck....pretty cool car. Wonder what the story is? Fun day overall, tho no parts found...got a lead on another yart that may have some parts cars, but it's in another part of the state...I love the chase...Still I miss my old haunt from the 80s-90s...there were always Challengers, Barracudas, Satellites, RRs, Darts etc....

Anybody else got any cool junkyard finds lately?

Thanks! ....no I didn't have that one recorded before, but who knows, it may turn up sometime in the future.
Guys, I collect 71 and 72 VIN/fender tag/broadcast sheet info for all Plymouth B bodies (not just runners and GTXs). Anything you come across in boneyards or whatever, I'd appreciate photos or at least a listing of the VIN and fender tag info....even 2dr and 4dr Satellites.

Eric, It'd be good to have a VIN database of sorts..even if it is at least now just collecting and recordng VINs and noting the where and whens that they popped up. I went to the Hamtramck registry the other day...pretty cool...I punched in a few VINs I had, but bah! Nothing.
When I was younger, I used to do a pencil and paper rubbing of the data plates in the junkyards...I wish I still had the rubbings...
With the digital cameras, it's so much easier..The 72 Satellite had a data plate, so I'll snap a pic of it next time I'm out there...assuming the car still is.
Here's a couple of data plates from ebay this year...One is a GTX sunroof model, the other was a 71 L5 Bahama Yellow 340 RR that was a real solid easy resto..you may already have these.

Thanks, I did have both of those.
I've been running an unofficial registry for a few years now. I currently have almost 1000 71/72 cars recorded with info including VIN. fender tag codes. broadcast sheet info, and where the car was found (I keep a history of where the cars have been). I also have cars flagged that have bogus tags and tags that have been up for sale separated from a car.

The 80's were so cool (except for the hair bands). You could find almost anything in the bone yards for our cars. The early 90's were ok if you stayed out in the sticks.
I found an old junk yard in WI. that still has quite a few 71 to 74 mopars with a decent amount of parts left. It is owned by an elderly gentleman who took good care of well. Now you have to catch him on a good day in order to get in and look around. He would drive you around so he can keep an eye on whats going on. I stashed a bunch of good stuff last time I was there because I spent every thing I had and didn't have room for more. He has a solid 72 rallye charger that is totally stripped but has all the original sheet metal and is remarkably rust free. That will be my next project. I always wished my dad had a bone yard instead of a bar.

Speaking of the 80s. I took this pic back in 88 at the shredder in Atlanta on Marietta blvd. It was cool to watch this operation. Much to my surprise as I was taking pics, someone pulled in this really clean Satellite. Hated seeing it destroyed, but a very novel pic!

That's for sure! But it looks to me like there's LOTS of good stuff to be parted off the green one at the beginning of this thread. The OP needs to quit looking at that sheet metal with southern eyes and think like a northerner who is used to seeing cars with gaping holes in the quarters, door bottoms and fenders!
