First trip to the track...

Post by Hotwheelsjr » Tue Mar 25, 2008 2:57 am

Well, the boy and I took his '73 SSP to the track for it's first time Saturday night. Basically stock 400, headers, 600cfm Holley, stock converter, 3.23 8 3/4" one legger, greasy 275/60x15 BFG Radial T/As with 35lbs of air -- best he mustered was a 15.34, with consistent 15.5's losing probably a sec on the start (easing it out so to not spin). I was pretty happy with that.

Ran my bone stock '04 Hemi QC with bald 70K mile tires -- 15.7 was the best I got out of her.

Here's the boy's '73 --

I've been reading my new book, "How to Hot Rod a Small Block Mopar" and it has different configs for the .318 that'll get you 12 and 13 seconds instead of the 15's. Not as expensive as one would think either.

Hey man, I gots a 400 in mine, and I don't know what was done to it before I owned it, but it goes real good. It's heavily cammed but I don't know if anything was done to the heads. I've never tracked it, but it feels like maybe high 12's or low 13s. I like it, but I still want a 440.

That was a lot of "buts".

so your ram was running close to the bird? was it all in the start, or does that mean more upgrades  ?

Yeah, it was all in the start -- I know he's losing a sec having to start out slow as to not spin -- if he could launch it without spinning, I know it'd be easily in the 14s.

so what has to be done about that? different tires? maybe lower the air pressure...35 seems kinda high for getting traction with a big block...mine are either 25 or 30psi, bu i have the fronts pumped up more for easier steering

everything's about the start...when i first got the satty, that was my problem...i just lit em up and couldn't get traction...

same thing, well almost, for track - my reaction time was pretty slow, but around 10th grade, i got that down, broke some records, got 3rd at Drake Relays, and ended up running at Iowa State University - then i tore my hamstring...

better to drive fast cars than fast legs...you can't turn yourself gimpy (well, unless you get in a wreck, but still) lol
