Whaeel Polishing

Post by 1972 Road Runner GTX » Thu Feb 21, 2008 10:15 pm

Go to this forum and look at the different tips for "wheel polishing" there are a million guys that have done it on their trucks...it is very common on big rigs...

My ol'man bought six wide-base alcoa from the local McDonald's distributor. but they were not polished, just milled. So I told him that I would bring 'em out for him, (honestly, I think I'm doing it more for me than him.) before he mounts them on the trailer. already have W.B. dura-brights on the tractor so here are my results on the first rim.

Before:

After:

Comparo:

My process starts like this
-220 on an R.O. sander
-4 ott steel wool
-320 wet sand
-600 " "
-yellow airway
-green airway
-white airway.

Any tip are appreciated

I DA sand mine with 320, up 800, then buff them with Mothers billet polish. I use the 9" floats on the rear of my duallys and they come machined finished too.

5" round, It probably took me 4 hrs or so, it was my first one so I had to test out different combos on the back of the wheel so I'm hoping the time goes down on the next ones.

I would say that you are doing quite a bit of extra work---after all the sanding you should get a good polish with less rouge and wheels.I would say any thing after green bar and wheel is a waste.I would try to yellow wheel with green rouge and not go any further if you are at 3500 rpm or more. Also brown tripoli bar on yellow wheel might eliminate the last da step-------------Just my thoughts It seems once you get deep into this the desire for shine is allways naggin at ya

Just started on my wheels tonight. DA with 320grit and machine buffed with Mothers Billet Polish. 320 was the only sanding I done.

Drag, that's looking good. Had those wheels been polished before or just milled finish?

the white bar doesn't seem to do to much, just evens out some. But I'm so damn OCD that i'll talk myself into doing all the steps because "that don't look right, man" even though its fine.

Hare ya go jhawk. This is one of the rear wheels that I did yesterday. I know that its a factory machined wheel that spent its whole life as an inside wheel. I tried the bars once and couldnt get it to work right. But Im sure I was prolly doing it wrong cause Ive heard alot of people using them.

wow thats alot of steps they look good all i do when we have rough wheels or if the wheels are milled is just sand down i start low maybe like a 80 then go up to 220 and i cut with a blue pad and brown i use alot of rouge i find it tuffer and alot easier to do it that way but i then use a white pad and green rouge i use white with brown rouge when i wanna make a touch up maybe a few weeks later

this is a grille shell i did this week its on my dads truck it was damn rough being the guy who had the truck b4 him didnt do much for polishing and then we had it acided and ran the winter weather but i just bumped it with a blue pad and then white.

Yeah, I have 2 buffers I use. One with a regular 5"-6" pad and one with a white buffing wheel on it. Its not too messy as long as you dont pund the polish on there. I do sections at the time.
