Okay so past few days ive been cleaning the 400.Until today I really didnt notice anything weird, but using a wire brush and a rag, getting the grease off.Letters appeared.

To me it looks like this(the pictures don't help much)

I think It Says "C" "U" "D" with a lower case "a"
now I'm counting my eggs before they hatch but could it possibly say that?
Then i thought about, what looks like an "a'' could be another "C" So "D.C." could possibly be where its from??And the u could be an "O"??Who knows, lol

So what does everyone think, has anyone seen anything like this before?
You can actually see brush strokes in the "D".Like i said the pic's give my find no credit but tomorrow i promise ill take more pic's.

the only question i have is .

are you wearing a mask for the fumes while you cleaning the 400 ?

: :stirpot: :haha: :P

just kiddn . i think its a whole lot of nothing . there wold be no reason for a motor to have CUDa on it , somebody at the factory could have been playing around before the 400 was painted .

just make sure that block is clean before you repaint it , so it doent end up like mine . i thought i had the 440 beyond clean . i painted it and a monthe later i took off the bag i had on to look mic the pistons , i lightly scratched the block and the paint peeled right off

Is that the original engine?
Check the numbers that are stamped in the machined pad right above the oilpan rail.Should be a VIN number.

Hey guys, I'm just a Noobie here, but does it possibly say "cold" on the side? I notice it's a early 230 block which may also make it a thick web block which have also been called cold weather blocks for thier extra beefy bottom end.
I have one of these 230 blocks with that writing on it as well... it's reaeeally beefy at the main saddles but I've never given it much thought before now.

Hm I dont see the word cold...

if so maybe they goofed when writing it,whos knows,
But i would like to correct myself,Its a 400 out of a 1972 Dodge Challenger that was later put in a charger of the guys that gave me the engine.

Challengers never came with 400s.Chargers did.
If you post the numbers stamped in the side of the block we can tell you what car and what year it came from.

I asked my brother 3 times if he was sure it was a Charger and not a Challenger(he tends to get his mopars confused)And he said he was 100% sure.if not he has some expalining to do,lol

I just ran the casting numbers,came up 71-72 400 b

There is a set of numbers stamped on the block here:(see red circle)

This will be the VIN number of the car it came out of,which will tell you the model and year.

You might have to clean this area up to see them.
