I have the engineering drawings for 71-72, and they do not show the GTX emblem at all (unless I'm just missing that page)

Speaking of 72-74’ RR/GTXs, anyone want to take on the subject of whether or not they can rightfully be referred to as a GTX? A WIW inquiry over on moparts recently about a 72’ GTX had a response of 1 of none, no RS in the vin, no GTX. Any takers here on that one?
Yeah I saw that thread over there awhile back and decided not to comment on it myself. If I remember right the GTX was its own model before the Roadrunner even existed and one of the things that always seperated the GTX was all the extras that came on it standard. I don't know much about the '72 and later GTX package that was optinal on the Roadrunner but I would need to compare what it came with that use to come standard on the '71 and earlier GTXs. I think for more of us here its about the body style and such then the different packages.

With an RM VIN number, I'd have to say it's a road runner....

Well since there was not really an official GTX package as for options the only word on it I found was: '72 MODEL CHANGES
Road Runner will become a Road Runner GTX when it is ordered with either the 440 4-barrel or 440 6-barrel optional engines.
So I suppose the GTX moniker fits as long as it has Road Runner in front of it. If you go by VINs, RS was always GTX and RM Road Runners. So I guess no such thing as a '72 and later GTX but there was Road Runner GTXs.

I swear Larry's 1972 Road Runner 440+6 has no GTX emblems on it?

With an RM VIN number, I'd have to say it's a road runner....
Perhaps I should rephrase my comment, (rightfully referred to as a “GTX” in addition to “Road Runner”).

The factory named these cars “Road Runner GTX”, yes VIN prefixed RM, when ordered with the drive train and supporting components that previously made up the heart of the stand alone GTX (RS). Some have referred these cars as being “GTX optioned” or having the “GTX package”, can’t find an option code or any of that kind of language on any order forms from the day. Simply, if you ordered a 440HP or tried to order a 4406bbl you received the additional name plates and, as the document posted above would seem to support, the car was officially named “Road Runner GTX”.

My point is; If someone wanted to speak of a 72-74’ GTX then a response of “1 of none, doesn’t have the RS VIN prefix, therefore can’t be a GTX” would be technically incorrect. The RS VIN prefix didn’t exist for 72-74’ and only applied to model years 67-71’. In all the years working at dealers in the seventies, I can’t think of one time were someone questioned another about referring to a 72-74’ RR/GTX by either name. Now some may question, with what became of the power output of the 440, along with the demise of the 4-speed option in 73’, whether or not the essence of the original GTX was preserved.

By contrast, look what became of the Road Runner name. By 76’ on the F-body it turned into a décor package (with an option code-A57) and lost the RM VIN prefix, assumed Volare numbering, yet are still called Road Runners(by some).
I swear Larry's 1972 Road Runner 440+6 has no GTX emblems on it?
Intentionally removing “stick-on” name plates from new cars, by the dealer prior to delivery at a customer’s request, has been going on for years and still is actually pretty common today. Especially references to engine size, wanting to appear as some kind of “sleeper” is the most used excuse.

It does not have any right now, hard to say if it ever did. Car has some ghetto stripes so could be they were taken off years ago.

all i can add to the confusion of this discussion is my title says gtx. road runner does not appear on there. as far as the emblems go these cars were built by humans and we know that never a mistake was made on an assembly line. all i know is i love these cars.
