Thanks for your generosity 1972RM23, I have one question thats been lingering in my head for a couple of months. To my knowledge in 1971 in the GTX line only 327 4 Speed 4brl 440s were built, I wonder how many out of those 327 were Tor Red. I wish I could be more knowledgeable about mopars, but I am learning. Thanks Again, Steve
Steve - Your at the same spot I was about 2 yrs ago, trying to find out how many 71 GTX 4 speed 4brl 440s were painted GY9 (Tawny Gold) with a White Top and White interior. I have the same reports for the 71 GTX so I took the time and done a bunch of formulas to figure it out and I came up with a number of under 2 of them. Since then I had a hard drive crash and I lost the formulas. I can tell you that there were 222 Tor red GTXs.
I can also say that my GTX has to be one of the least optioned GTXs ever made, besides the standard GTX options it has a radio, hood pins and inside hood release, thats it. It has NO console and no tach to mention of.

here is a couple of good questions for you to answer..... :D

1. You have an inside hood release, does it have a Black or Chrome handle?

2. Look at your bucket seat backs, the plastic ones, do they have a hinge cover built into them or are they without them and the covers are seperate?

3. Look at the valve cover on the driver side and tell me which cover does it resemble, see my picture?

I was asking you to look at your car and tell me if your car

1. has a black or chrome handle

2. seat backs have or not have a molded hinge cover

3. your driver side valve cover matches which valve cover in the picture

Hi Nick
I have a couple questions for you. Carb number on your 440. Distributer is it sigle poit or duel and the numbers. The shifter rods, does your reverse rod look like a candy cane? They list 2 different sets of rods for the tranny, one for e-body and one for b-body and I think they're wrong. It looks like the one for a e-body is the one I need.

I am asking for your numbers because I don't have either a carb or distributer and I want to get the correct ones. Thanks in advance for your help.

Good questions and strange answers......
First off, my car is an LA built car, incase you haven't heard that LA built cars were strange, for instance, my distributer is a single point and the number on it is 3438694 = 1971 440HP AUTO trans..... I bought the car from the original owner and he parked it in 1977. He assured me that it was all original except for a couple of hose clamps and after I went through and checked it over he was right.
The carb is numbered 4967S which is correct for my car.
As far as the reverse rod, I can't get under my car to see this at this time, sorry......

Incase you have never seen it, here is how I found her.....

Mostly out of idle curiosity. Since I bought it new and it was virtually unchanged (putting US Indy mags on was the biggest thing) I was interested in seeing what Galen had to say. I was a little disappointed in what I got for a couple of reasons. (1) it took six months to get (2) didn't tell me much more than what I already knew.

That was why I didn't get his white books or a build sheet decode, as I had already done the decode with a book I bought elsewhere. Funny thing about that...I found a couple of minor errors in what the build sheet said was on the car versus what was really installed. Again, having been the only owner I knew what it came with.

Year One Prices Go UP!

Post by 72Rdrnner » Fri Dec 01, 2006 9:23 am

FWIW I just got a new (2006) Year One catalog! YIKES! Looks like a lot of items have taken a BIG jump in prices.

I was considering a new gas tank. In my 2004 catalog they were $216, but now the exact same tank is $683 a three fold + increase. So much for that idea!

I noticed another little thing I'm curious about.

Throughout the catalog there is the red, white & blue Mopar logo with the words "Authentic Restoration Product" with some items. I am wondering if this is something Mopar has started to produce parts and sell them through their dealerships?

Ferris? Anyone? Enquiring minds want to know!

I never could find a fender, dash or door tag that looked anything like the VIN or any part of it. Talked to a buddy of mine who's a state trooper and he said there were some "hidden" VIN's (whatever that means) that only law enforcement knows about. Apparently this is to help them track down stolen cars that have VIN number alterations.

I found the one on the radiator frame (it was upside down and had two digits reversed) and the cowl. I read an article in Mopar Action that indicated there might be one on the package tray frame somewhere and also inside the quarter panels on the bottom of the cavity where the rear window regulators are, but I never found anything there.

It might be I was looking for something that more closely resembled the VIN number (like on the cowl or radiator frame) and mistook the hidden VIN for a part number.

All in all it was fun just pouring all over the car when it was stripped down to the frame and nothing else.

One thing I did see. Chrysler didn't seem to worried about exact fit of parts they welded together. I suppose it had to do with the more manual technology of the day. On my car the left B pillar is two degrees out of alignment which made putting it back together a bear until I figured it out. The factory just pulled the fender in against the rocker panel and gouged some metal out to make it fit! Naturally I missed the reason behind all that and fixed it up like new again, nice and straight. When I put it back on, it didn’t even come close to lining up! That is when I found the “crooked” B pillar!

Also I found a couple of places where sheet metal was just "bent" to make parts come together and then welded. Not to mention a lot of "extra" welding wire just stuck to the weld itself.

But they did build one helluva bulletproof drive train!

On the inside of the radiator support stamped in upside down and some where on the cowl (though I've never seen mine there) would be your numbers.

That is; year of production, plant built at and production number.
I sent you a PM with info regarding tag numbers and breakdowns.
If you want the same done for your car please send me your fender tag numbers or a scan of your broadcast sheet.
