Inevitable?

Post by aerodynamic » Thu Jul 12, 2007 8:48 pm

I made a comment a couple months ago about not needing a manual valve body trans because I'm almost 40 and getting too old to be street racing blah blah blah. Well, last night after leaving the car show I was headed home. I'm stopped at a light, no one else around. Up next to me pulls a late model Trans Am...you know the one...big scoopies on the hood and all. Probably LT1? Anyway...I guess once it's in your blood it just can't be helped. Your machine is bucking and snorting and waiting to be let out of the gate. Well, I let it out alright. Came off the line perfectly and suprised him..he was a hair late (kids...playing with the throttle instead of watching the light). I didn't quite have my foot in it all the way, and he started to catch me, so I hammered it the rest of the way but broke the tires loose on second. He got a bit ahead, so I backed off a tad, got my traction back and came up on him. Just as I caught him, we both had to slow for the cars stopped at the next light. One of those cars was a cop. It's probably lucky for both of us he had his window up and the A/C on because he apparently took no notice as we slowed up behind him. I'll bet we just about got the full quarter mile in before getting on the binders. Never did look at the speedo either. It so happened we both ended up turning into the same gas station and tried to decide who won. We ended up calling it a draw. I must admit the adrenaline rush was a kick, but it was probably more the fear of getting busted than the racing itself. I'd had a couple beers at the show and smoky could have really
given me a hard time had I gotten snagged. That being said....It was pretty cool. Felt like old times. A little more prior practice with that sort of thing and I might have really given that young whippersnapper what fer! Hee Hee!

aerodynamic, I am pretty sure most of us can relate to your story except me, I've always been pretty cautious driver in general but one saturday night around a year ago I decided to see what this puppy had so as soon as the light turned green I went, burned tires on first and second (the sad part is that I wasn't racing anybody) all of a suden two cop cars got behind me and pull me over. To make a long story sad I got arrested and my car got inpouded, man it was an experience that i will never forget...BTW first time spending the night in jail hope it never happends again  ...it was a nerve-wracking experience and it hunted me for a while.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting arrested for smoking tires. Might there be a tad more to the story? What was the charge exactly?

Man you had to ask...suspended license and improper start, sort of embarrassed about it.

That's ok. When I had my first Runner in the 80's I did a short stint with everything expired...registration, license, AND insurance. I came to a police DWI checkpoint, and they were stopping every few cars. It was the worst few minutes of my life I think. There was no where to turn around or get out of traffic either. Just when I was almost there, they wrapped it up. I still had to drive past them as they were picking up the road cones, and getting into their cars, and believe or not one of them even gave me a thumbs up. I forced a smile and waved back. That may have been the most nervous return wave in history! One look at my plate and I would have been toast. I should also add it probably took me a week to un-pucker!

I'm sorry about your luck man. You weren't hurting anybody, but they probably would have just ticketed you for the smoke show if it wasn't for the bum license.

Reminds me of the time in New Orleans - about 1996. I was in law school, driving a '66 Vette coupe with a 425 hp 427 - sidepipes, knockoffs, 4 sp, 4.11s, Maroon with a black gut. Motor was not stock; had been breathed on a bit.

Anyway, I'm on Napoleon Ave at about 10 pm, had a lady friend in the car, leaving a party and heading to a bar when some cops pulled up to me at a stop light. They were checking out the car, and then they put the Caprice in neutral and revved it some. I'm thinking that they can't be serious, so I idled away from the stoplight as they gunned it. At the next light, they motioned for me to get on it, and that's all I needed. I came out of the hole a little sideways, got straightened out, got some good rubber in 2d gear, and then slowed down when I hit 3d. They pulled up to me at the next light and gave me a big thumbs up! :D

Wasn't always this lucky, however. Have had about 2 dozen tickets.

well i used to drive the hell out of my satellite...burnin tires, 180s, top speed challenges, stoplight racing...and guess what i got a ticket for....

supposedly laying rubber 2 blocks....in my ford taurus!!! i about flipped...it was winter and was icy at the stopsign...so when i took off my tires spun...no squeeling and i'm sure once i got past the intersection they were beyond spinning, but the cop was an ass :( oh well

i guess it's kinda like my dad...he always had cudas and chargers, at least a couple hemis...guess what he got pulled over in...only ticket ever - going 65 in a 55 in a volkswagen beetle!

When I was in my late teens some friends and I were headed up to New Hampshire's White Mountains in two separate cars on Rt 93. We were excited about the trip and speeding a bit, weaving in and out of traffic. I was driving a Chevette by the way. We never saw any cops...until we came up to a toll booth with lots of troopers standing out in front. One pointed at me and another at my buddy in his VW GTI, and indicated for us to pull over (airplane got us). They gave us both tickets for speeding and "driving to endanger"...I guess that's the weaving part. Well, later that day while we were in the mountains, I was looking at both our tickets when I noticed that his varied slightly from mine. On the portion where the trooper is to indicate level of traffic flow, there are three options they can check off: light, medium, and heavy. On his ticket they checked "light" and on mine they checked off "heavy". I had heard about inconsistencies being a problem for the court so I thought I'd give it a go and went to the hearing. I sat there all day and watched EVERY person lose their case, having court fees tacked on for good measure. I wasn't feeling too confident when my turn came up. Now, at each person's case, the same officers from the day's tickets have to stand up and explain how they use such and such machine to clock speeders from the air, and how they direct officers on the ground to grab the correct vehicle. So, after they did their thing, I stood up and explained about the tickets being inconsistent. I had both of them with me and handed them to the judge. As soon as I started talking the officers all looked at each other and then at me and I knew I had them. The judge said something about if we can't agree on traffic flow then we can't agree we pulled over the correct vehicle...case dismissed. Strangely enough he did not dismiss my friend's because he didn't come. Dumbass, lol. The fine was $150! As an aside, most of the other people's attempts at getting out of tickets consisted of "but I wasn't speeding!"

On the registration papers for the Nats is clearly says in BOLD letters.

No Burn Outs on Brice Rd; Or Heath Rd.
(due the the deaths in Tenn.) from that parade incident.

I guess it's officially over.

That was an incredibly unfortunate incident. I thought the guy was just doing burnouts until I saw the video. He actually dragged it down the street once he caught traction, which I couldn't understand. That incident seems to have disappeared from the public discussion. I wonder what happened to the driver. Since he was clearly authorized to perform the burnout, one would think those who authorized it would share some responsibility.

Now, a rant:

This sort of thing makes me think about how we lose freedoms in this country. Seems like we do it to ourselves. For example, fireworks are legal to sell and buy here in Florida...but they're illegal to use. So, once a year for a few weeks in July we rebel, and to celebrate freedoms we no longer really have, we light the fireworks anyway. Very ironic. And all because a few boneheads hold the stuff in their hands and lose a finger or set the neighbor's yard on fire.

I'm pretty responsible, and I have a hard time understanding why I get punished for what they did. I think for every freedom they take away, another should be given. There's no doubt that living free carries some risk but I want the right to take the risks provided I'm careful and conscientious.

I think soldiers have fought and died for us so that we could have more freedom, not less.
