1973-1974 grille color scheme

Post by patrick » Wed Apr 25, 2007 8:27 pm

I am really confused on the 1973-74 Road Runner grille including but not limited to color scheme. I have seen some that are one uniform color of gray (unpainted plastic?), I have seen some that are black with the center trim and outer trim a lighter gray, and also one with what I believe was a chrome strip that ran horizontally the length of the grille, right in the center, or did I dream that?

Please help! Maybe it's just the difference between a Satellite and a Road Runner...

Thanks everyone! :-)

Been wondering about that myself. Mine is all blacked out, and I have no idea if it came from the factory like that, although I doubt it.

Hi Patrick, my grill has the center and outer trim grey. It should be original because I'am the second owner. I have owned mine since 77. It has a built date of 1-73 . I have seen some with the full grey colour but have not seen any that are blacked out grills.

I have seen the scheme you describe (center and outer section trim light gray/silver and rest of it black) many times, and I'm going to venture to guess it's the difference between a Road Runner and a Satellite insomuch as they had totally different grilles in '72 as well. I'm going to guess the '73-74 Satellites only have gray.

Okay, so the winning question is: What type of black (high gloss, medium gloss, flat) and what type of gray/silver should I use? I have chrome spray, but I'm not sure if that would look correct or not.

I've had my '74 since Dec. 1973 (brand new, saw it come off the truck). It came with a silver (argent) grill with a chrome strip in the middle and one on the upper valance.

Mine is a Roadrunner

Was the chrome strip in the middle just paint or a real chrome strip?

I have the real chrome strip that runs betwen the bottom of the grille and the valance, but that's the only one I'm aware of.

Patrick,

It is a real metal strip. Most likely polished aluminum. It has a painted black stripe in the middle of the metal piece

Is it just me or does it seem to be missing from every Road Runner/Satellite? Was it a Road Runner only thing?

Don't know. I even went as far as to get a black grill to calm down all the experts.
