New guy, hey! 72 gy9 rr, stripe color
Hey guys, I currently have a 1972 rr under restoration but so far have been unable to recover a build sheet. Car has has one repaint in the 80's in a poor matched color to the original gy9 tawny gold metallic. Just wondering if anyone has an idea of the possible stripe combinations or color used on this paint color. My info shows reflective black, white, and gold. Any experience or old pictures? Car is a 400 3 speed bench seat car. Black and grey inside. I will have pictures soon.
Cheers

Re: New guy, hey! 72 gy9 rr, stripe color
Welcome!! Great color!
IMO, the stripes should be gold. I've only seen one GTX with the gold hood stripes, and it looked great.
a quick google image search on "GY9 roadrunner" turned up this pic:

Hey steve
Thanks! I like the look of that gold. Although I don't have the build sheet, I have always felt that's what it came with. The roof strobe not the hood treatment. I found this picture of a black reflective stripe which I kinda like as well. Not sure if it's correct gy9 though.
Cheers

I decoded the fender tag a while ago, not sure if the V codes for stripes are on there. I have attached a picture of the vin and fender tag, if you guys wanna take a look. I post codes for what i have.

Re: New guy, hey! 72 gy9 rr, stripe color
If the stripe ("V" code) isn't on the fender tag then the car never came with one from the factory. Considering that this Runner back in the day was what they'd call a bare bones stripper. Just a 3-speed manual trans, no radio, and the bottom line interior. Dealers would often use this one in an ad (low price) as bait to try and talk you into a better one on the lot with more options. Personally myself I'd restore it the way it left the factory. Generally guys who have had this type over the years change them over to a 4-speed trans, add the stripe of their choice, install a radio so that it's really just another '72 Road Runner out there an not something that is unique, and stands on its own. I know members on here probably will jump on me for saying that. I respect someone making their car the way they want. But the fact that so few strippers survived all these years untouched. It seems a shame to make it like all the rest. I know lots of guys don't like the GY9 Tawny Gold color. When it's fresh an new I consider it to be a color I would of been happy with.

Re: New guy, hey! 72 gy9 rr, stripe color
This post is right on so many levels. I agree with everything you said. I'll post a response with some history of the car when I get off work.
As you said strictly factory is the plan with this one. And for the record I love the tawny gold.
Cheers bud
Ty
Update: As per previous owner (second owner), the car was ordered and purchased purposely for use on 1/4 mile drag strip. They wanted a bare bones big block, and apparently preferred the 3 speed. Car was used on the road and track until mid 70's when the original 400 engine blew up. Funny thing was that the A230 trans withstood a lot of abuse at the strip. That was the last time the car was registered for the road. It sat in a barn until roughly 10 years ago when the previous owner purchased it, started a partial resto and had the car painted. Somewhere along the lines it stalled, and sat outside covered in atlantic canada snow for most of its life until i grabbed it. At some point somebody robbed the original 1972 only roadrunner grille and front bench seat, but the rest of the original equipment is there.
I am in the process of rebuilding the original trans but it seems to be in great shape internally. This being a bare bones car stripe delete car, with few options, i believe the only way to go with the restoration is factory stock. As was stated above it might make it "stand out" a little more. We already have a heavily optioned original paint survivor petty blue rr in the family, therefore it will be nice to have a car at the other end of the options spectrum.
I will try and document the restoration as much as possible, and if anyone is interested post some pics along the way. I undoubtedly will need all the help i can get with this one. Thanks in advance. I have attached a few more pics for you guys.
Cheers

Cool project!
Just checking in after a long absence, and it's nice to see new stuff still coming out. Even nicer to see another Canadian GY9 car.
I look forward to seeing more of it.

Hey Phil
I am from Gander, Newfoundland. The car came from Amhert, NS. Your message has me excited as I hoped that someone on here might be from that area and know the car or its history. I hope that person to be you!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what, exactly, is C12 - Federal Restraint?

I think they're just shoulder belts, differentiated from the C13 convertible shoulder belts.quapman wrote:I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what, exactly, is C12 - Federal Restraint?
