topless satellite?

Post by teddy1500 » Sun May 07, 2006 6:59 pm

I have a basketcase satellite body, rl21g. no motor or trans. the body is shot, needs rockers and quarters, it has some bondo in it. I saw a pic of a satellite being chopped up, and if cut in the right place, the body would look good as a convertable.
my question is this. What convertable frame might fit an odd ball like this, or would it be possible to have something built?
I could always build a nascar clone out of this

I would check out a few e-body rag tops, or a B body rag top if you can find one. I would think the minimum would be weld-in frame connectors and boxing the frame like most 71 GTXs have. Could be common to the 440 cars also. Also a solid brace from wheelwell to wheel well behind the rear seat.

I wouldn't think there is rag top "frame" since the cars ar unit body and they gain their strength from the whole body.
4th generation B bodys- there is no substitute.

I think he is talking about the convertible top frame, not a car frame. My best guess would be a 70 b-body top.It actually would be cool to see a 71 turned into a convertible.

The woman I bought my Satellite from, told me she saw a 71 Satellite chopped to a convertible a few years ago. I think there was one in a mopar magazine to. I think it was brown.

Yeah I saw a pic of a roadster in the image gallery under satellite. Probably would cost quite a bit, but it would definitely be cool! You could probably get an interior or body person to make a custom top for a custom fit.

That picture of the brown car was done with photoshop or some program,If you look thru the windshield you can still see part of the opposite quarter panel and window.

True, but that would definitely be the look I'd be after with the quarters arched up like that instead of flatter. That would look so much better in any color other than BROWN!!

Convertible top frame for 71-72rr

Post by scottish440 » Sat Jun 24, 2006 11:50 pm

I have been wanting to do this also.....i have done some mesurements...and found a possible donor...for the frame....

but...

it is bran x......a 71-74 mercury cougar and or a 71-72 mach 1 convert...
the car lines are similar....this is very important as you don't want to look
like your driving under a bubble....and the mercury converts are cheap!

look one up and give it a look see....scott
