383 vs. 360

Post by Elvad » Thu May 27, 2010 9:47 pm

The 383 is a big block. The 360 is a small block. The 383 acts like a small block and the 360 acts like a big block. 383's rev like few other motors, 360's have gobs of torque, it's a pardox. (insert Star Trek joke here) SOOO much roller cam stuff is available for smallblocks it boggles the mind, Dodge re-entering NASCAR obviously helped there. Hey, over 900 hp at 8500 rpm is amazing..not much chance I will turn 8500 and stay out of jail very long. I am a big block guy, I can't wait to build a 500 cubic inch B or RB motor. The stroker kits available today are like a fantasy option never available in the past. Chrysler sells a 440 small block crate motor! called the 'Super Commando' sound familiar? You can buy a 500 cubic inch 'B' 400 stroker kit! The time has come, everyone knows, you get what you pay for, be proud of the most powerful and reliable engines Detroit ever turned out. Someone asked if a 383 runner could hit 200..absolutely! we have THE strongest block design on the planet, ever hear of a Top Fuel Car? The Hemi block is born from the 350, 361, and 383 blocks. A machine shop I went to as a teen had a sign on the wall with a bunch of broken parts, rod pieces, purple bearings, rod bolt pieces, and shattered pistons, with a quote.. "Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go?.." Never Forget the Hurst Hemi Darts and Cudas have ruled SS/AA drag racing SINCE 1968, nothing has ever been faster, they are running in the high 8's now, and only racing each other, no ford or chevy anywhere in sight for over 42 years! I know this is a B body site but damn guys, can't deny it. Mopars have ruled drag racing now for over 40 years hands down!! P.S. ask your local Ford or Chevy Top Fuel team what engine is in there car..... There IS only one engine in that class. The Chrysler Hemi based design Top Fuel engine is one of the most powerful engine types ever created by man, only the Saturn V, and Shuttle engines are even on the same page....and it all started in a Dodge Dart in 1968.

The first generation Hemi head is an aircraft engine from WWII, adapted to automotive use just after the war in like 1950?? The 331 and later the Firepower 392. These supercharged engines in drag racing were capable of high 6's in dragsters of the time. The car shown here is THE predecessor to the Funny Car, because it's funny looking, hence Funny Car. No Joke this is a scary fast stupid hard to drive front engine drag car. There is an old 70's movie about them, the old Willy's where they steal the engine out of a police cruiser...and beat the 50's chevy guy.. can't remember the name....Hemi Funny Cars today are pulling 3.9 seconds at 330 MPH, they have shortened the 1/4 mile to only 1000ft because the Hemi's are sooo fast...what more proof do you need? Watch Top Fuel Funny Car Racing, and you are watching the fastest, most powerful, most dangerous, Drag Racing on the planet, Ford and Chevy need not apply, they are not even on the dance card!

Hemispherical cylinder heads have been used since at least 1901;[2] they were used by the Belgian car maker Pipe in 1905,[3] the Peugeot Grand prix Car of 1912, the Alfa Romeo GP car of 1914, Daimler, and Riley. Stutz built four valve engines, conceptually anticipating modern car engines. The BMW double push rod design, taken over by Bristol Cars, the Peugeot 403 and the Toyota T engine are other well known hemi engines. Harry Arminius Miller racing engines were also a notable example.[4]
