1973 Satellite Build

Post by Hugh » Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:05 pm

Just wanted to share some pics of my engine build from 2 years ago. It's the original 318 bored .020 over with 9:1 flat top pistons, Edelbrock .420 lift cam, Edelbrock Performer Intake and 600 cfm carb. I also used "302" casting heads off a 1989 Dodge truck 318 motor. I had the intake valves replaced with 1.88. With the closed chamber heads and 9:1 pistons, I get really good compression. The factory exhaust manifolds in the pictures have been replaced with Hooker Jet Hot coated headers and A PYPES exhaust system with x-pipe. In Hindsight, I would have went with the TTI headers and exhaust. The hookers come below the k frame on the drivers side, and the passenger side is about 1 1/2 inches off center with the cut out in the trans k member. The Pypes system was supposed to be application specific and direct fit, but I struggled with it for over 8 hours to make it fit!. I see if I can post pics of the system under the car. I does sound nice though! Image

Looks great!
Great sense of accomplishment when it comes together.

Any HP or Torque # on 318?

Well A guy in my club had a 318 in his car similar to mine and he posted 214hp and 229tq at the rear wheels on a chassis dyno. I have a little more compression, and closed chamber heads, but I think those numbers would be very close. I would like a shorter gear, but I would want overdrive, because I hate a screaming engine. I don't cruise the cities anyway, I prefer open roads so my 2.71 is good for me now. I also have a MP distributor and 48,000 volt coil and an orange ECU to put on in the spring. I would love the chance to dyno tune! I don't know my club members timing, etc. for his dyno pull. I am going to experiment with my timing though. A dyno would be great for that.

Thanks!! I've never thought there was anything wrong with keeping it a Satellite. If I could have ordered one new for 1973-74, I probably would have ordered an SSP. Mine is a Sebring, but I find I am ending up putting a lot of Plus options on it. I have bought and reupholstered white buckets with wood grain upper door panels and I would like a rallye dash for it. The SSP's always struck me as such Sleepers! Thanks again for your input! You are the first person not to bawl me out for not going the RR clone route with the car!!!
