Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
For the sake of accuracy we need to document our positions with factory documents, orginal window stickers; et cetera. I will say that with little effort so far I have already found pretty strong documentation to support my position. And to be fair a I have also found strong documentation to support the hood mounted position...but with a slight hitch, the hood mounted is correct for the 1970 model year.
Charger, Road Runner and Super Bee restoration guide by Paul A. Herd is one book that explains and backs my position. I post more later and if you have info to the contrary please do post it.

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
I haven't looked at the parts book yet, but tyically it will tell if there was a mid year part change or different parts #s for different applications. Didn't we determine the hood indicators had different part numbers because of pigtail length?
Also, anyone know where/when during the assembly process the panel (hood or fender) was punched for the indicators. I'd imagine if the punched hood was not available they'd have grabbed a pair of punched fenders as these would have been more common given the amount of Satellites that have the L31 option....might account for some cars build non-standard.
I'll have to look back through photos of cars I know are survivors and compare with broadcast sheets.

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
i thought at one time it was believed that they were definitely supposed to be on the hood for the "callout" style, and any that came with the indicators on the fenders were a screw-up - most likely done in the early production days
Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
Ok, I only have a couple survivor cars with broadcast sheet info that had the turn signal indicators. Both cars are GTXs and both were built at St Louis. One SPD of 921 (Sept 21, 1970) and one 223 (Feb 23, 1971). Both have the indicators on the standard two scoop hood, and both broadcast sheets are coded L31 just like the fender tags. I also have broadcast sheets from several other non-survivor cars, all that have indicators are coded L31 whether they have the air grabber hood or not.
I have photo documentation of several other survivor cars with indicators, and all of them with the standard performance hood have the indicators on the hood. In fact the ONLY standard performance hood cars with fender indicators I have, that can be documented as to originality, are the 802 built cars (more than one). So, all the evidence I have backs up Jeff's statements.
I still believe there may have been factory mistakes, but I'm inclined to believe that for almost the entire 71 model production run, correct procedure would be to install the indicators on the hood on a standard performance hood car.

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
All I know is that my car is coded L31-Hood mounted turn signals with standard hood call outs. Kind of off topic but what is the lenth of the cable for the turn signals in the hood? I was told 2-3 different lengths, just wanted to make sure. Thanks

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
My 71 RR has L31 coded hood mounted turn signal lights/cables. They appear to be the original equipment. The drivers side wire is approximately 24" and the passenger side wire approximately 36 inches.

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
Thanks, Ron. On my car, I have the drivers side cable attached while the passenger was severed partially at one time. I heard that they were different lengths.Ronnman wrote:My 71 RR has L31 coded hood mounted turn signal lights/cables. They appear to be the original equipment. Back to the original subject, it's back for a return engagement on ebay:

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
Anyone have a photo of the hood mounted indicator location? I have a set of indicators, I think fender mounts, but if hood mounts would like to know location. My car (BEFORE I bought it) was wrecked and repainted more than once, although one time was blasted down the right side. Some items have been added or deleted as former owners/repairers thought necessary.

Re: "First" 71 Road Runner
I see he just listed the car on the Moparts On-Line Swap Meet .
I tried to sell the car on Ebay, but became rather discouraged with all the "crank" e-mails and people trying to send me "Bill of sale" with embedded Trojan Horses and viruses. The car did not sell at the end of the auction

Marty isn't in a position where he has to sell the car, so I believe he's willing to wait for the price he wants. He was hoping to sell it to fund another mopar....

I think I'm familiar with one of the "interesting trades" he mentions.Eric wrote:Marty isn't in a position where he has to sell the car, so I believe he's willing to wait for the price he wants. He was hoping to sell it to fund another mopar....

He's finally dropped his price (after prompting from Moparts to actually post one).
Looks like a great car, with a cool history, but I just don't see many people willing to pay that kind of premium for a non-matching numbers 383 car.
