Re: 1972 SSP 400-4BBL Progress
The Chrysler 8-3/4" rear axle assembly was introduced in 1957. It is a banjo-type (Hotchkiss) axle, ie. the differential is contained in a removable carrier assembly. The axle has an 8-3/4" diameter ring gear. There are three basic types available distinguished by their drive pinion stem diameter. The 8-3/4" axle was the primary axle assembly and saw continued use until 1974.

How the car usually is when I get to play with it....

Washing off the dust

All clean again

Engine bay work should be completed end of next week.
Interior requires a fair bit of work.

Yes, they were on the car when it was bought back in 1991. Same for the door edge protectors.

Love it, I am also restoring my 72 Sebring Plus as a survivor car, you just do not see many of them done this way any more. Nice to watch it come together and very helpfull to me as well.
Sometimes I get to feeling that if Xmas, Fathers Day and my Birthday did not exist, then aftershave too would not exist.

Re: 1972 SSP 400-4BBL Progress
When I was growing up my Dads everyday driver was a 1972 SSP. It was powered by a 400 4 bbl 4 speed. He had headers on it , man I can remember the roar when that old Thermobog kicked in. It went like crazy for what it was. He drove the snot out of it, that old 400 wouldn't quit. It was orig brown on the top with gray on the bottom with a green interrior , he had it repainted green . Buckets and console car. Loved that car.

Re: 1972 SSP 400-4BBL Progress
Hi,
Engine and air-con system (ice-cold) are finally together, which has pretty much finished my budget for now. Here are the latest pics as to what a factory new '72 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus 400-4BBL should look like (well, in the engine bay, anyway). The rest of the car needs a some more beautification and attention to the bodywork, but more has been done in the last 16 months than in the last 16 years.
For those interested :-
Engine Specs
Chrysler 400, Bore 4.372, Stroke 3.380, Cylinder volume 831.51 cc Total volume 405.9 CI, Intake valves 2.080, Exhaust valves 1.650, Compression ratio 9.00, Manifold Dual-plane std-flow, carb flow 800.0 CFM, peak Horsepower "304.3", Peak Torque 414.8. This engine will run fine on pump fuel with a increase in horsepower of 30% over stock engine.
Designed to be mild rather than wild, but able to cruise all day long well above the limit w/ lots of 'passing power'.
