Okay i just got the numbers. And It was from where you circled,I knew about that tag,i saw it when i was cleaning, but im trying to figure out what the hell my brother had wrote down when he looked up the engine.I mean he couldnt have made those digits out before i cleaned it.
Anyway,I dont want to post them here but Since all those numbers are is a partial vin..how do you decode it,Everytime i try to deocde it it screws up..
By the way is the term "suffix code"only used with gm engines?

Just post the first seven letters/numbers.Then we can tell you what car, motor, year, and where it was built.
Should be in this order:
Letter/letter/number/number/letter/number/letter

If the numbers you posted are the first seven then somethings wrong becuase they should be the last numbers:
2......year 1972
g......assembly plant St.Louis
1
2
6
3
9
7.......last six numbers are the sequence numbers

Yeah you are right on later engines some only had the last numbers. So i guess we will not know what it came out of unless someone can tell by the sequence number? But definetly not a challenger.

heres a pic anyway that second digit is either s g,6,or an 0

Could there be a part on this engine that my brother could have gotten number from that could possibly come up anything challenger when decoded?I have no clue what the hell he wrote down and decoded.

I was looking the the Engine Identification info in Year One Catalog.
Casting number, engine stamping, small and B/RB ID Boss.
Nothing mentions if a motor was built for a Road Runner or a Coronet,
A Newport or a Challenger.
I don't think you can tell what car it came out of. Just where, when, sequence, displacement.
I'd go to
www.yearone.com maybe they have it on there web site. Take a look.
