Re: New guy, hey! 72 gy9 rr, stripe color

If the stripe ("V" code) isn't on the fender tag then the car never came with one from the factory. Considering that this Runner back in the day was what they'd call a bare bones stripper. Just a 3-speed manual trans, no radio, and the bottom line interior. Dealers would often use this one in an ad ...

Re: Small world

I don't claim to have all of the 1972 RRs serial numbers but out of the 389 numbers so far I've collected over the years. I've seen others that haver close serial numbers with one being built at St. Louis an the other in Canada, and they're months apart. Yeah, it makes me scratch my head too! :?

Re: 1974 Satellite fender tag

The KB5 above the E24 is the car's body color. The other one above it is the top or roof color. If you have a vinyl top then this would be where that would be coded or if the car was available with a painted top, other than the body color, then the different paint code would appear in that spot. Hop...

Re: 1971 SSP Project

Being an old fart who was in my 20's back then the quality of the factory paint wasn't always the greatest, and purple and silver were two of the colors that come to mind that definitely tended to fade the fastest in a short amount of time especially if your car sat outside all of the time. Plus if ...

Re: Tuff wheel color

Yes it would be black. It wasn't until the later '70s when they used the tuff wheel again that it came in colors.

Re: Tuff Wheel with PADDED horn cap

The center pad is black and the ring is chrome in the early years. In later years when they used the tuff wheel again the pad was color keyed to the color of the interior.

Re: Petty Museum

There are pictures of a Petty #43 '71 Road Runner running testing at a track but that car was the Chrysler test car with Petty's number on it, and not Petty's actual race car. It's possible that the wind tunnel testing of the 3/8 car made them realize it would be better for aerodynamics to run the S...

Re: Petty Museum

I heard that the '71 Charger wind tunnel test car was given to a college but unfortunately I don't remember which one. Time has a habit of erasing our memory bank as we get older. :(

Re: Petty Museum

The Petty Superbird was built later using Bird parts they still had to install on Petty's '70 Road Runner short track car which was built to replace the first short track car that was destroyed. So yes it was raced, just not as a Superbird. As for you hoping to take that '71 wind tunnel car home wit...

Re: 72 Roadrunner Parts Color Questions

Yes to all 3 of your questions. '72 Road Runner tail light lenses all have black surrounds. It's one of the quick ways when I'm looking at a picture of one to detect if it is a tribute car or the real deal, or if it is real makes me wonder if it was in an accident at one time. I have seen two differ...

Re: Correct side marker lenses for RR -72

To the best of my knowledge all of yours should have the silver/chrome metal paint. Age, car washings, rubbing etc. wears the silver/chrome off, and they look normal to you because you forget they came with them or you're a young pup who never saw them brand new. I'm not sure if Chrysler later on in...

Re: 3rd Time's a Charm?

There's tons of clone '71-'72 RRs out there. But you just don't see a Sepring Plus this neat out there. I think it would steal the shows or cruises you'd decide to go to showing up with it basically restored back to stock, and I've owned '72 RRs most of my life. Only had one Sepring Plus and I kick ...

Re: How To Adjust Gap Between '71 Bumper and Hood

I can't say for sure what the gap is. But I heard way back in time that the reason Chryler went to the simpler front bumper starting in 1973 is that they had lots of production problems with getting '71-'72 bumpers that weren't tweaked, and had to throw lots of them away, losing money over that. Whi...
